Home festival every five years — 12th edition for the 1045th city anniversary
Unlike an annual city festival, the Döbeln Home Festival is an event that occurs only once every five years. This rarity gives it special significance: thousands of former residents return from all over the world, class reunions from the 1950s to the 1990s are organized, and the entire city transforms into a single festival ground for a week. The 12th edition in 2026 is themed '1045 Years of Döbeln' — the town's first documented mention dates back to the year 981.
Eight days of events will be spread across the city at 14 different venues — including the Town Hall, Bürgergarten park, Lutherplatz, St. Nicolai Church, Stadtwerke, Klosterwiesen meadows, Muldeninsel island, and several districts. The opening ceremony on the Klosterwiesen meadows with the Mittelsächsische Philharmonie will kick things off. This will be followed by travelling theatre premieres with the Youth Theatre, a park festival in the Bürgergarten, and a festival weekend on the Muldeninsel island featuring a medieval market and stage programme. The family festival at the Stadtwerke, a 'blue light' mile with police and fire services, and the City Beach will round off the programme. The highlight will be the grand parade on June 21st — the traditional culmination of every Döbeln Home Festival.
One tradition makes the Home Festival particularly special: class reunions for those who graduated between 1951 and 1997. Former students from about half a century of Döbeln's school history will meet, often for the first time in decades. This cross-generational dimension clearly distinguishes the Home Festival from regular city festivals — it is a collective reunion.
Three cultural highlights stand out: the opening with the Mittelsächsische Philharmonie on the first day of the festival; the travelling theatre as a travelling theatre premiere by the Döbeln Youth Theatre; and the concert by the band Mosaik 2026 — Mosaik is one of the most famous East German bands from the 1970s to the 2010s. In addition, there is the #visit Doebeln exhibition, which uses visual means to connect with the city's identity and history.
Döbeln is located in the Mittelsachsen district on the Freiberger Mulde river, roughly halfway between Leipzig and Chemnitz. With a population of just over 25,000, the town is the centre of a rural Mittelsachsen region. The historic city centre with the Obermarkt square, St. Petri Church, and the Town Hall, the Muldeninsel island, and the Bürgergarten are the main tourist attractions.
