Elegant picnic in white — Karlsruhe's silent summer festival since 2013
The concept originates from Paris: in 1988, François Pasquier invited his friends for a white picnic in the Bois de Boulogne — everyone in white, own tables, own food, perfect manners. Today, Dîner en blanc takes place worldwide, from Paris to New York, Sydney, and São Paulo. Karlsruhe has been home to its own edition since 2013, organized by KTG Karlsruhe Tourism GmbH under the umbrella of visit Karlsruhe.
Unlike in many cities, Karlsruhe's Dîner en blanc is an open-source event: no registration, no entrance fee, no membership. You simply show up — dressed entirely in white, with your own table, chairs, crockery, cutlery, white tablecloth, and a festive menu of your choice. Even the napkins, wine and water glasses, every detail remains white. The exact location is only announced shortly before the event on the visit-Karlsruhe website and via the Instagram channels (@visitkarlsruhe) — this preserves the element of surprise and avoids overcrowding.
Setup begins punctually at 6 PM. Hundreds of guests carry their tables and chairs together to the chosen location — in the palace gardens, on the market square, in the city park, or another Karlsruhe landmark. Within minutes, long rows of tables are set up, table lamps are placed, wine glasses clink. Anyone who has been there once knows the scene: a perfectly choreographed city ballet, followed by four to five hours of picnic elegance, table conversations, music, and finally sparklers that lead the spectacle to its climax.
Karlsruhe — the fan-shaped city on the Rhine and seat of the Federal Constitutional Court — offers other cultural highlights around the Dîner en blanc: the Palace, the Zoological Garden, the ZKM, and DAS FEST in the days before. The city center-west district around the market square is an ideal starting point for an extended weekend in Baden.
The Dîner en blanc Karlsruhe 2026 will take place, as is traditional, on the first Saturday in September — thus on September 5, 2026. It starts at 6 PM. The exact venue will only be announced shortly before the date on the visit-Karlsruhe website and via the official social media channels (@visitkarlsruhe on Instagram and Facebook). No prior registration is necessary, and admission is free.
To bring: a white table, two chairs, a complete set of white tableware (crockery, cutlery, glasses, tablecloth, napkins, candelabra), a three-course picnic menu, and drinks.
