Traditional carnival parade on Faasend Friday in the Dillingen district of Diefflen
In Saarland, Carnival is called "Faasend" in the local Lorraine German dialect – and the strongholds of this tradition are often not in the big cities, but in districts with a strong village community. Diefflen, a district of the industrial city Dillingen/Saar in the Saarlouis district, is one such place. While the Dillingen city center celebrates its grand Rathaus storm and city parade on "Fetten Donnerstag" (Fat Thursday), the following Faasend Friday belongs exclusively to Diefflen.
The Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Diefflen has been organizing the parade independently for decades in cooperation with local carnival clubs, clubs from the entire city area, and neighboring municipalities. The assembly point is at 3:00 PM; the parade starts precisely at 4:11 PM – a time that holds almost sacred significance in the Fasenacht world. The procession moves through the village center of Diefflen and ends in front of and inside the community center, where the actual hall program begins.
As in any proper Saarland Faasend parade, elaborately decorated floats, walking groups with political and social satire, marching bands, dance groups, and friendly carnival clubs march through the streets. Confetti rain, thrown items ("Kamellen"), and the typical Saarland cheers are all part of it. Anyone who has experienced a parade in Diefflen or Beckingen knows: here, people really sway with all their hearts, not just for the cameras.
Dillingen/Saar – located on the Saar and Prims rivers in the west of Saarland – is known as an industrial city with the traditional Dillinger Hütte (DHHU). With around 21,000 inhabitants, it is one of the larger cities in the Saarlouis district. Faasend is one of the annual highlights of city life, and Diefflen, as an independently organized district, makes its firm contribution to it.
Anyone visiting the Diefflen parade should be aware of the Dillingen city's Faasend calendar: on Thursday, February 12, 2026, the jesters will storm Dillingen's town hall at 2:45 PM, and the main parade starts at 1:00 PM from Hoyerswerdaplatz heading to Römerhalle Pachten. The Diefflen parade on Friday marks the start of the actual Faasend peak season with Rose Monday and Shrove Tuesday.
As in previous years, the organizers expect several thousand spectators along the parade route. Applications for participating floats, walking groups, and carnival clubs are to be submitted via the Dillingen/Saar city administration by the registration deadline in January 2026.
The complete list of participating groups and floats will be published shortly before the parade on dillingen-saar.de.
Admission to the parade is free. Hall program in the community center with separate admission by the Heimat- und Verkehrsverein Diefflen.
By car: via the A8 (Dillingen exit) or the A620 (Saarlouis exit), then B405. Road closures are expected in Diefflen's town center during the parade – park in the side streets outside the parade route. By train: Dillingen main station (Saarbrücken–Trier line), then take a city bus or taxi to Diefflen (approx. 4 km).
Admission to the parade is free; the hall program in the community center follows separate admission conditions set by the organizer.
Costumes are explicitly encouraged. Those who want to catch thrown items should bring a bag or pouch. Families will find good spots along the quieter sections of the route away from the main intersections.
Hotels in Dillingen-Mitte and in Saarlouis (5-10 km), numerous guesthouses in the surrounding area.
