Grand Carnival Parade of the Niederlahnsteiner Carneval Verein on Shrove Tuesday
The Niederlahnsteiner Carneval Verein (NCV) is one of the oldest and largest carnival clubs in the Rhein-Lahn district. Its "Black-Yellow" colours are a trademark in the Niederlahnstein district, and the annual Kappenfahrt on Shrove Tuesday is the convivial and jester's highlight of the Lahnstein carnival season.
The term Kappenfahrt refers to an old Rhenish tradition: instead of large parade floats, the revellers initially march through the streets with caps and simple masks – today, however, it has evolved into a veritable carnival parade with large floats, dance groups, and brass bands.
The parade comprises around 100 entries. In addition to the NCV itself, many walking groups from clubs, neighbourhoods, and regulars' tables participate, along with themed floats addressing political, social, and local issues. Eight brass bands ensure that a different rhythm can be heard at every point along the route: from classic brass bands to carnival bands playing popular hits.
The parade begins at 2:00 PM in Didierstraße. From there, the Kappenfahrt winds its way through the main streets of Niederlahnstein. Thousands of spectators line the route, colourfully costumed, with bags for the sweets and shouts of "Helau" that echo from one row of houses to the next.
After the parade, the festivities continue in halls and pubs until Ash Wednesday brings the carnival merriment to an end.
The 2026 Kappenfahrt concludes the carnival activities of the Niederlahnsteiner Carneval Verein. The combination of traditional club culture, broad citizen participation, and musical diversity has shaped the character of this parade for decades.
