Corpus Christi procession and parish festival of the parish of St. Georg
Corpus Christi – the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ – is one of the major feast days of the church year in the predominantly Catholic Upper Palatinate. In Pfakofen, a community of around 1,600 inhabitants in the district of Regensburg, about 22 kilometers southeast of the district capital, the day has been celebrated for generations by the parish of St. Georg with a solemn procession and subsequent parish festival.
After the festive service in the listed Parish Church of St. Georg, a hall church built in the New Objectivity style in 1929 with a medieval chancel tower, the procession begins. The Blessed Sacrament is carried under a canopy through the decorated streets, past four altars artistically designed with flowers, birch branches, and images of saints. First Communicants scatter petals, the local brass band provides musical accompaniment, and the fire department, associations, and the Marian Men's Congregation (MMC) march along with their banners.
Afterwards, the parish garden transforms into a convivial meeting place. Families of the village come together for lunch, coffee and cake, beer, and Weißwurst. The Parish Pastoral Council and the MMC provide catering, with the proceeds supporting the parish. There is traditionally a small program for the children – the parish festival has always been a space for encounters between young and old.
Corpus Christi and the parish festival are part of Pfakofen's dense event calendar, between the procession of supplication on Ascension Day, the Whitsun procession, the Florian festival of the fire department, and the apple festival in autumn. The day reflects the vibrant religious and association-based life of the community.
In 2026, the high feast of Corpus Christi falls on Thursday, June 4 – a public holiday in Bavaria. The parish of St. Georg Pfakofen celebrates the day with a festive service, followed by a procession through the decorated village streets, and a parish festival organized by the Parish Pastoral Council (PGR) and the Marian Men's Congregation (MMC). The procession leads to four traditionally prepared outdoor altars where the Gospel, prayer, and Eucharistic blessing are administered. Afterwards, the parishioners gather in the parish garden for a convivial celebration.
Exact times will be published in the parish newsletter and the Pfakofen community's event calendar shortly before the date.
Pfakofen is located about 22 km southeast of Regensburg, easily accessible via the state road ST 2144 or from the A93 (Hagelstadt exit). Parking is available around the parish church and at the sports field.
Participation in the procession and the festive service is open to all. At the parish festival, costs are only incurred for food and drinks.
The procession traditionally begins after the festive service in the morning – those who wish to experience the solemn exit from St. Georg's Church should arrive in good time for the service.
