The Archabbey of Beuron in the Danube Valley
The Archabbey of St. Martin Beuron was founded in 1077 and has been one of Germany's most important Benedictine centres since the revival of monastic life in the 19th century. Nestled in the spectacular rocky landscape of the Upper Danube Valley (Sigmaringen district, state of Baden-Württemberg), between the steeply rising Jura rocks and the meanders of the young Danube, the monastery is considered a spiritual and art-historical site of European significance. The famous "Beuron Art School" of the 19th century influenced all of Europe from here, and Beuron scholars significantly shaped liturgical renewal in the 20th century.
The Abbey Church as a Concert Hall
The present-day Abbey Church was built in the 18th century in the Baroque style and redesigned at the end of the 19th century under the influence of the Beuron Art School. The combination of a bright Baroque spatial volume, subtle Beuron wall paintings, and balanced acoustics makes the sacred space an ideal concert venue for choral and chamber music. Concerts in Beuron are rare – the few dates per year are all the more lovingly organised.
The 2026 Concert
On November 22, 2026, two ensembles will jointly present a concert evening in the Abbey Church:
- Choir of the Rast-Bichtlingen Parish – ambitious church choir from nearby Bichtlingen
- Kammerphilharmonie Bodensee-Oberschwaben – professional chamber orchestra from southern Germany
The concert will last from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Detailed programme information will be communicated via the official website of the Archabbey and the Rast-Bichtlingen parish; the exact repertoire is traditionally published a few weeks before the concert date.
Beuron as a Spiritual and Tourist Destination
The Archabbey invites visitors year-round for spiritual retreats, spiritual exercises, and courses on meditation and Christian spirituality. Three contemplative encounter days mark the calendar in 2026: on June 28, July 26, and November 22. The monastery complex itself can be visited daily, and the monks' daily prayers are open to everyone. Those who combine attending the concert with a hike in the Danube Valley or a walk around the monastery complex will experience the unique combination of nature, art, and spirituality for which Beuron is known worldwide.
Upper Danube Valley – Nature Park with Rocky Scenery
The Upper Danube Valley between Tuttlingen and Sigmaringen has been protected as the Upper Danube Nature Park since 1980. The young Danube has carved deeply into the Jura rocks, revealing bizarrely shaped rock faces, castles, and caves. The region is considered the "little Grand Canyon of the South" and is a popular area for hiking, climbing, and canoeing.
