In the middle of Coburg's old town, around the Prince Albert Monument, which commemorates Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's consort born in Coburg in 1819, the historic market square becomes an open-air wine bar for four days in the summer. The Coburg Wine Festival on the Market Square brings together regional and South German vintners who serve their wines directly at their stands: Riesling and Müller-Thurgau from Franconia, Bacchus and Silvaner from the Main Valley, Burgundy wines from Baden, along with local eateries from Coburg's city center offering cheese platters and small snacks.

Live Music and Relaxed Atmosphere

The wine festival aims to be more than just a market square beverage stand. Organizers Nima Khorsandi and Enrico Pizzato of Residenzler Events have specifically tailored the concept to the urban Coburg audience: Live bands play on a small stage in the evening, DJs take over later, and long seating arrangements invite guests to linger. The market square, framed by Coburg's Renaissance houses and the Parish Church of St. Moriz, provides a special backdrop for the festival.

The Festival That Plans for the Weather

In 2026, the Wine Festival on the Market Square continued its summer tradition: Originally announced for May 14–17, 2026, the organizers had to postpone the festival at short notice due to a cold and rainy weather forecast – to June 4–7, 2026. "A wine festival thrives on atmosphere, summer temperatures, and cozy evenings outdoors," explained Khorsandi and Pizzato, justifying the decision. A pragmatic choice that shows how dependent the festival is on the weather.

Coburg – The City of Saxon Dukes

Coburg is located in northern Upper Franconia, right on the border with Thuringia, and is one of the most traditional small residential cities in Southern Germany. The Veste Coburg, one of Germany's largest and best-preserved castles, towers over the city. The market square itself, a historic square preserved almost unchanged, is considered one of the most beautiful market squares in Franconia and is the venue for numerous city festivals throughout the year.
