Classical and Rock in the Romanesque Cistercian Nunnery Ruins
The Stadtroda Monastery Ruins are the remains of a 12th-century Romanesque Cistercian nunnery. After extensive renovation, it was reopened in 2012 and has since served as an extraordinary open-air venue for concerts and theatrical performances. The Classical and Rock Festival utilizes the unique acoustics and atmosphere of the location for a concept that combines classical music and rock on one stage.
The festival brings together international rock bands and the String Orchestra of the Regional Music School on one stage. This creates a type of program that is rare in Thuringia – a crossover between classical (E-Musik) and popular (U-Musik) music, appealing to both classical music lovers and rock audiences.
Stadtroda is located in the Saale-Holzland District, southeast of Jena. The small town with around 6,000 inhabitants boasts hidden cultural heritage with the monastery ruins, the monastery park, and the nearby Roda stream, which the festival brings to light.
The event format – crossover between classical (E-Musik) and popular (U-Musik) music in the monastery ruins – will continue in 2026. The concerts will take place outdoors; in case of bad weather, the city of Stadtroda will announce any adjustments at short notice.
Stadtroda is located on the A9 motorway (Stadtroda exit) and is reachable by car in 20 minutes from Jena or Gera. Train connections via the Saalfeld–Jena line.
