Anniversary Edition — one of Germany's oldest and largest pottery markets
The Bürgel Pottery Market has been one of Germany's oldest and largest pottery markets since the late 1970s. 2026 marks the 50th edition — an anniversary that holds a firm place in the ceramic world's event calendar. Around 100 selected ceramic artists from Germany and the Czech Republic will exhibit from June 20th to 21st, 2026, in Bürgel's town center — tableware, home accessories, garden pottery, jewelry, and sculptures.
For the anniversary, the renowned Walter Gebauer Ceramic Prize 2026 will be awarded — under the motto "Grace and Beauty — Natural Forms". Walter Gebauer was one of Bürgel's most influential ceramic designers in the 20th century; the prize named after him honors outstanding contemporary ceramic works. A special exhibition at the Bürgel Ceramics Museum accompanies the award ceremony.
Beyond the market stalls, local pottery workshops will open their doors. The Echtbürgel Pottery at Hintergasse 13 invites visitors to factory tours. An antique market for historical ceramics will take place in the historic Gebauer/Freigang pottery building — popular with collectors. Firing demonstrations with open fire and Raku firing will showcase the transformation process from raw piece to finished ceramic. The Bürgel Ceramics Museum presents "450 Years of Pottery Tradition" and contemporary ceramic works.
The town of Bürgel is located in the Saale-Holzland district in the state of Thuringia, about 20 kilometers northeast of Jena. The town has been a pottery center since the 17th century — the typical Bürgel pottery with blue engobe on a white background and the characteristic "Bürgel dot" decor is known far beyond Thuringia. For decades, the pottery market has been the central meeting point for the German and Central European ceramics scene.
The 50th edition of the Bürgel Pottery Market runs from Saturday, June 20th to Sunday, June 21st, 2026, from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day. Over 60 market stalls from exhibiting ceramic artists will line the town center. The range includes classic Bürgel pottery with blue engobe, contemporary sculptural works, tableware, and garden ceramics.
For the anniversary, the Walter Gebauer Ceramic Prize 2026 will be awarded under the motto "Grace and Beauty — Natural Forms". The prize-winning works will be presented in a special exhibition at the Bürgel Ceramics Museum.
Firing demonstrations will take place on both days — open fire and Raku firing will showcase the transformation process of ceramics. The Echtbürgel Pottery at Hintergasse 13 offers factory tours, and the historic Gebauer/Freigang site hosts the antique market for historical ceramics.
