Advent market in the UNESCO World Heritage mine
For over a thousand years, the Rammelsberg in Goslar was one of Europe's most important ore mines. With its UNESCO recognition as a World Heritage site, the mountain has developed into one of Germany's most significant industrial heritage locations in recent decades. The Christmas Rammelsberg utilizes this substance and stages the historic mining buildings into an Advent landscape that is hardly comparable to classic market formats.
The market is spread over two levels. Above ground, the former workshops, the washhouse, and the large halls of the mine open their doors and are filled with market stalls, stage areas, and catering zones. Underground, smaller stalls are set up in the tunnels and at the sites of mining work, so a walk around the grounds inevitably leads through both worlds.
The market stalls offer regional arts and crafts, Christmas decorations, wood and metalwork, incense products, honey, liqueurs, and classics of Advent cuisine. On the stages, choirs, brass ensembles, and soloists alternate with small theater performances and storytelling readings.
A small group of alpacas can be encountered in the outdoor area, Santa Claus reads from classics of Christmas literature, and glassblowers, wax figure artists, and pottery workshops demonstrate their craft live. Thus, the market combines the regional showcraft tradition with the industrial history context of the location.
Because the mine site is only accessible via narrow mountain roads, the organizer provides a free park-and-ride service from Osterfeld. Shuttle buses run every 20 minutes during market opening hours. Additionally, the local bus line 803 stops near the entrance.
In 2026, the Rammelsberg will once again open its gates on a December weekend. The event has carved out a firm place in the region's Advent calendar in recent years and is one of Lower Saxony's most unusual market formats.
Above ground, the focus is on the market, stage, and catering. Underground, there are smaller stalls in the tunnels, and the atmosphere shifts from the vast hall spaces to the confined world of mining history. Visitors exploring the underground routes should wear sturdy footwear and warm clothing.
The detailed program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in late autumn. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years:
