Six-week summer cultural program by the city of Mainz on Marktplatz and Karmeliterplatz with 36 free program items
Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen is one of the most successful city cultural programs in the state capital and an example of how public urban spaces can be activated in the summer. The program is organized by the City of Mainz in cooperation with local cultural organizations, universities, and the independent scene. The focus is on making high-quality culture accessible free of charge — for the residents of Mainz as well as for the numerous summer tourists.
The program is concentrated in two central squares in the old town. The Marktplatz by St. Martin's Cathedral serves as the main stage with daily changing performances against a backdrop of outstanding architecture between the baroque market fountain and the Romanesque-Gothic cathedral facade. The Karmeliterplatz, quieter and more intimate, hosts smaller formats, science events, and children's programs.
The program structure is clearly defined: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday — the typical weekdays when an additional program enriches the Mainz evening. Starting at 4 PM, the children's program begins with theater, hands-on activities, craft sessions, small magic shows, and live music for young audiences. Starting at 9 PM, live music from regional bands in the genres of jazz, pop, folk, rock, and singer-songwriter kicks off on the Marktplatz.
Over six weeks, the program includes a total of 36 program items — a density that makes the format an almost continuous summer companion. Science events from Mainz universities, theater performances, dance demonstrations, and book presentations complement the musical offerings.
Mainz lebt auf seinen Plätzen is accessible, free, and imbued with Mainz's identity. Anyone walking through Mainz's city center in late summer can experience a small cultural event on several evenings a week — without prior announcement, without a ticket, without obligation.
The 2026 program will be published by the City of Mainz in the summer. The structure will follow the proven cornerstones of previous years: six weeks of programming with a focus on August and September, three event days per week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday), a children's program starting at 4 PM, and main stage live music starting at 9 PM on the Marktplatz by the cathedral, with complementary science programs from Mainz universities on the Karmeliterplatz. A total of 36 program items throughout the entire season, with a focus on regional artists.
