Classical music in the Chorin monastery ruins in Barnim
The Choriner Musiksommer is one of the oldest and best-known open-air festivals for classical music in Brandenburg. Since 1964, Choriner Musiksommer e.V. has invited visitors every summer to the impressive brick Gothic architecture of the Chorin Monastery in the Barnim district – the 63rd edition taking place in 2026 continues this long tradition.
The former Cistercian abbey from the 13th century provides an extraordinary setting for concerts: the partially preserved monastery church serves as a covered stage, while the audience takes its seats in the former nave. In good weather, you can enjoy classical music under the open sky; in case of rain, a roof provides shelter. The special acoustics of the brick walls give each concert a distinctive sound.
The festival presents 18 concerts annually with top ensembles from all over Germany: Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, Staatskapelle Halle, Komische Oper Berlin, Brandenburgisches Staatsorchester Frankfurt, Dresdner Kreuzchor, and Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Cottbus are regularly featured. The repertoire ranges from Baroque church music and symphonic classics to opera arias and occasional swing.
Chorin is located in the Barnim Nature Park, about 60 kilometers northeast of Berlin. Traveling by regional train from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Chorin station takes about an hour; from the station, it's about a 20-minute walk through the forest to the monastery, or you can take the shuttle bus. Many visitors combine the concert with a hike by Lake Chorin or a visit to nearby Eberswalde – the district town of Barnim.
The 63rd season of the Choriner Musiksommer presents a wide range of sonic experiences in the historic monastery ruins. Highlights include performances by renowned orchestras and choirs that bring the brick walls of the Chorin Monastery to life during the summer months.
The festival opens on June 20 with a concert by the Philharmonisches Orchester des Staatstheaters Cottbus and concludes on August 30 with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin. In between, there are further highlights such as the concert by the Dresdner Kreuzchor, a swing program with the David Hermlin Orchestra, a guest performance by the Komische Oper Berlin, and appearances by the Staatskapelle Halle.
