Neighbourhood festival with flea market and inclusion focus in Alt-Hohenschönhausen
The meadow between Schöneicher and Freienwalder Straße is located in the heart of Alt-Hohenschönhausen (Lichtenberg district) — an area with prefabricated buildings, many elderly residents, numerous families with migration backgrounds, and a significant number of Berliners with disabilities living in the surrounding housing projects of Cooperative Mensch eG. It is precisely here that the community centre “Living Together in the Neighbourhood" has been organising the summer festival “Celebrating Diversity" for several years, transforming inclusion from a buzzword into an experienceable neighbourhood festival.
The organiser is Cooperative Mensch eG, one of Berlin's oldest and largest social cooperatives for people with disabilities. The community centre “Living Together in the Neighbourhood" is one of the most accessible facilities for inclusive education and leisure in Alt-Hohenschönhausen — the summer festival is one of its flagship events and is supported by the Lichtenberg District Office.
The Lichtenberg district is often associated in Berlin with the Stasi Museum and the residential areas of Karlshorst. “Celebrating Diversity" showcases a different side: vibrant, democratic neighbourhood life in an area that is often underestimated. Anyone wanting to discover Berlin beyond Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg should mark this date.
As in the years 2023, 2024, and 2025, the community centre of Cooperative Mensch eG plans the accessible summer festival “Celebrating Diversity" for July 2026. The exact date and programme are traditionally communicated in early summer via press releases from the Lichtenberg District Office and the website of Cooperative Mensch. As in previous years, live music, free barbecue food, a flea market (stall fee: cake instead of money), a bouncy castle, and a children's programme are expected, along with an accessible site featuring a quiet tent for rest periods.
The exact programme for the 2026 edition will be announced by the community centre of Cooperative Mensch eG in early summer 2026. Based on the 2023, 2024, and 2025 editions, the following concept is expected:
Meadow between Schöneicher and Freienwalder Straße, 13055 Berlin (Alt-Hohenschönhausen, Lichtenberg district). Tram M5/M6 to Gehrenseestraße, then Bus 256.
Tram M5/M6 or S-Bahn S75 to Gehrenseestraße or Wartenberg, then Bus 256 or a short walk. From Central Station: S5 to Lichtenberg, then Tram M5.
Completely free. Barbecue food and drinks are provided. Flea market stall fee: a homemade cake or muffins instead of money.
Fully wheelchair-accessible, accessible sanitary facilities on-site, quiet tent with mats and cushions.
