Student Open-Air Festival on the CAU Kiel Campus
The Campusfestival Kiel is an initiative of the Allgemeine Studierendenausschuss (AStA) of the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel – the largest university in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Once a year, the central Christian-Albrechts-Platz in front of the university library transforms into a festival site with two stages, workshop tents, and food trucks. While the festival is primarily aimed at students, it is open to all visitors and is considered one of the more unconventional events in Kiel's summer program.
Stage 1 features larger acts with a focus on Indie and Alternative, as well as a selection of Kiel's local heroes. Stage 2 is reserved for Singer-Songwriters, newcomers, and experimental acts – traditionally kicking off with the AStA-hosted Singer Songwriter Contest. The spectrum ranges from Alternative Metal and Indie to Hip-Hop and Electronic music.
What distinguishes the Campusfestival from a classic city festival is its workshop area: Acro-Yoga, circus arts, glitter face painting, smoothie bikes, screen printing, hands-on art, and craft activities for all ages complement the stage program. In the student district around the CAU in the district-free city of Kiel in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, the festival attracts several thousand visitors each year, who move from workshops to the after-show party in the student club Max.
The Campusfestival explicitly positions itself as a student festival with social responsibility: low prices, fair fees, awareness campaigns, an on-site awareness stand, drinking fountains, and sustainable catering. It is part of the broad cultural program that the CAU and the AStA present in Kiel every year.
The 2026 Campusfestival starts at 2:00 PM with workshops and the Singer Songwriter Contest on Stage 2. From the afternoon onwards, bands from both stages will perform on campus concurrently. Headliners and local heroes alternate, with workshops, food trucks, and awareness stands in between.
