Autumnal village festival in the Dithmarschen marshland
The Busenwurth village festival is a classic on the Dithmarschen event calendar – not large, not marketed regionally, but a fixed date for the community and its neighbours. The programme is traditionally divided into three acts: afternoon games for the children, an evening feast for the adults, and dancing until late at night.
Busenwurth is located in the marshland between the Eider and Elbe rivers, in the heart of the Dithmarschen district. The small community belongs to the Amt Mitteldithmarschen and is a typical example of the specific settlement structure of the North German marshland: 'Wurten' (artificially raised mounds), brick buildings, vast fields. Visitors to the village festival get to know a region that often lies in the tourist shadow of the Kiel Canal and the North Sea coast.
The format is deliberately manageable: From 2:00 PM, games start on the playground – children of various age groups compete in classic village festival disciplines (sack race, egg-and-spoon race, skill stations). From 7:00 PM, it moves to the Dithmarscher Eck – the local inn – for the suckling pig dinner. Advance booking is mandatory here, as places are limited. From 9:00 PM, the evening programme with music and dancing for the whole community begins.
The community of Busenwurth organises the festival itself, supported by local clubs. This self-organisation is characteristic of the village festival tradition in Schleswig-Holstein: no external showmen, no centralised event organiser, but the village community itself acts as host, provider, and audience.
The Amt Mitteldithmarschen lists the Busenwurth Village Festival 2026 for Saturday, September 26, in its event calendar. The municipality confirms the traditional three-act format: children's games in the afternoon, suckling pig dinner in the evening, and dancing and music until late at night.
The game stations on the playground open at 2:00 PM and are designed for children of various age groups. From 7:00 PM, the suckling pig dinner begins at the Dithmarscher Eck inn – important: places are only available with advance booking tickets, which will be organised by the municipality in good time. From 9:00 PM, the evening programme with music and dancing starts.
Exact details (music programme, prices) will be communicated via the Busenwurth municipality and the Amt Mitteldithmarschen.
Afternoon games are free. Evening suckling pig dinner requires advance booking (tickets from Busenwurth municipality or Dithmarscher Eck). Evening programme follows the dinner.
