Plan for cash (food stalls in encampments prefer cash). Children love the blacksmith workshop — register early.
Medieval Times at Vondern Castle
Vondern Castle in northern Oberhausen is one of North Rhine-Westphalia's most significant moated castles — a preserved lowland castle from the 14th century, picturesquely surrounded by moats. From Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 19, 2026, it will be the venue for the Burgspektakel Oberhausen for the fourth time — a medieval festival that fills the castle with knight encampments, market stalls, horse tournaments, and fire shows.
Jousting Tournaments on Horseback, Several Times Daily
The centerpiece of the Burgspektakel are the jousting tournaments on horseback, which take place several times daily on the tournament grounds in front of the castle. Authentic knightly armor, skilled riders, lances, swords, spear combat — performed in two acts with stories from the castle world. In addition, there are falconry displays (peregrine falcon, golden eagle, owl in flight), acrobats, and a spectacular fire show after dark on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Buhurt Battles and Grand Engagements
Extensive Buhurt battles take place on two stages and the tournament grounds — grand battle reenactments in historical full-contact style. Armored warriors clash in team formations, the audience hears steel on steel, sees shield walls, helmet thrusts, and fair combat rules. The Burgspektakel collaborates with experienced reenactment groups from all over Germany.
40 Encampments, 60+ Traders
Around 40 encampments set up their tents around the castle — inhabited by craftsmen, soldiers, cooks, and noble ladies. You can wander among the camps and watch blacksmiths at work, cobblers nailing, basket weavers, and weavers at their looms. On the medieval market promenade, over 60 traders offer their goods: leather goods, jewelry, fabrics, mead, medieval books, horn crafts, incense, and spices. Gastronomy: hearty stews, suckling pig, potato pancakes, with vegetarian and even vegan options — all served in wooden bowls.
Vondern Castle — The Moated Castle in Northern Oberhausen
Vondern Castle is located in the Osterfeld district and is one of Oberhausen's most important archaeological monuments. First documented in the 14th century, it belonged at times to the Counts of Werden and the Lords of Vondern. Today, the castle is a cultural center hosting weddings, concerts, and medieval festivals. The grounds around the castle are ideal for open-air events: a spacious courtyard, meadows for the encampments, and enough space for the tournament grounds.
For Families, Adults, and History Enthusiasts
The Burgspektakel is designed for all age groups. Children can try blacksmith workshops and archery. Wheelchair guests receive child admission prices — the grounds have paved paths around the castle. Cash payment is available for food, but many stalls now accept cards.
