Three days of old town festival with 8 stages and Burgmann election — 18 to 20 September 2026
Quakenbrück bears the traditional epithet Burgmannenstadt. The historic designation refers to the Burgmannen — nobles who guarded the town in the Middle Ages and resided in the Burgmannen courtyards. Several of these courtyards still stand today in the well-preserved old town. The annual Burgmannsfest brings this tradition to life.
The date is fixed: third weekend in September. In 2026, the festival falls on 18 to 20 September. For three days, it will fill the town's historic old town.
The kick-off on Friday evening is a highlight with tradition. The new Burgmann or Burgfrau for the festival year is presented from the town hall — an honourable tribute to personalities who have rendered services to Quakenbrück. The mayor, association leaders, and the festival committee accompany the ceremony.
Over the three festival days, eight stages in the old town offer diverse programmes:
During the day, market stalls, association presentations, and family programmes characterise the scene. In the evenings, the stages take over. Sunday is open for shopping — Quakenbrück's shops open with special promotions.
The organiser is the Initiative Quakenbrück (IQ) — a civic association that has been organising the festival for years. The volunteer structure supports the festival financially and logistically.
The Burgmannsfest is one of the identity-forming events for Quakenbrück and the Artland region. Those who grew up in Quakenbrück have their memories of the festival. Visitors from the northern Osnabrück region, the Emsland, and the Oldenburg Münsterland travel here.
The 2026 edition continues the long-standing tradition: a ceremonial ringing in, three days of stages, markets, and family entertainment.
The exact 2026 programme will be published by the Burgmannsfest committee on burgmannsfest.de. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
