About Brückenfest Letmathe

Three days of Brückenfest in the heart of Letmathe — a district of Iserlohn in the Märkisches Sauerland: three stages with live music, a traditional duck race on the Lenne river, a night flea market until 11 PM on two evenings, an illuminated Lenne riverbank, a family day, and a grand fireworks display. With around 50,000 visitors per event, the Brückenfest is the largest of its kind in South Westphalia and one of the most important dates in the Iserlohn event calendar.

Letmathe — A District with its Own Identity

Iserlohn, with nearly 92,000 inhabitants in the Märkisches Sauerland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, is the largest city in the Märkischer Kreis district. Letmathe, with over 27,000 inhabitants, is the second-largest district and possesses its own distinct identity. It was an independent town until 1975 before being incorporated into Iserlohn. This independent history is still palpable today, with its own town center, clubs, and festival traditions. The Brückenfest is the most famous of these traditions.

Why “Brückenfest”?

The name refers to the festival's central location: the Lenne river flows through Letmathe, and the railway bridge of the Ruhr-Sieg line is one of the district's landmarks. The festival grounds extend along Hagener Straße, the central shopping street, and along the Lennepromenade. In the evenings, bridges, the Lenne riverbank, and individual buildings are illuminated — an atmospheric staging that distinguishes the Brückenfest from other town festivals in the Sauerland region.

Three Stages, One Festival Mile

The program structure is diverse: three stages are spread across Hagener Straße and the Lenne riverbank. Each stage features different genres — Pop and Rock on the main stage, acoustic and Singer/Songwriter performances on the side stage, and Schlager and party music along the Lenne riverbank. Local bands, cover bands, and occasional national acts perform over the three days. Admission to all stages is free.

Duck Race and Night Flea Market

Two program points have become true Letmathe institutions. The Duck Race: thousands of small plastic ducks are released into the Lenne river and float downstream; proceeds go to Letmathe clubs, and the owner of the winning duck receives a prize. This is pure German-social folklore — cheered on year after year by entire families.

The Night Flea Market: on two evenings of the Brückenfest, the flea market remains open until 11 PM — a rare opportunity to browse for treasures and vintage finds under the evening lights. This format has proven to be a magnet for flea market enthusiasts from all over the Sauerland region.

Fireworks as the Highlight

The grand finale is the spectacular fireworks display over the Lenne river — usually on Saturday evening. The pyrotechnics are launched from the Lenne riverbank, with the fireworks reflecting in the water and above the railway bridges. Several thousand spectators gather along the bank, in garden cafés, and in the adjacent streets.

A Volksfest as an Economic Engine

The event is organized by the Werbegemeinschaft Letmathe — an association of local retailers and restaurateurs. With around 50,000 visitors per event, the Brückenfest is not only a Volksfest (popular festival) but also a significant economic factor for Letmathe's retail sector. Shops, cafés, and restaurants benefit greatly from the weekend influx of guests from the entire Märkischer Kreis and beyond.
