Traditional Autumn Kirwa on the Sunday before Michaeli
The Sparnecker Herbstkirchweih is a traditional autumn Kirwa in the Upper Franconian market town of Sparneck in the Hof district. It always takes place on the Sunday before Michaeli – the feast of Archangel Michael on September 29 – making it one of the classic autumn Kirchweihen whose date is oriented around the church year. The market town of Sparneck is the organizer, together with local clubs and traders.
At the Kirchweih, traders offer a diverse range of goods at the Kräermarkt, which enlivens the town center. In addition to the market activities, Kirchweih festivities with gastronomy, the typical Franconian beer service, and the convivial gathering of the village community characterize the day. The Herbstkirwa is therefore less a large commercial festival and more an expression of lived village culture.
In rural Franconia and the Upper Palatinate, the Kirchweih (»Kerwa«) is much more than just a market day: it is an expression of connection to the place and the parish. In Sparneck, the Herbstkirwa combines this tradition with the autumn season and is – alongside the Heimat- und Wiesenfest in summer – one of the social highlights of the year.
Sparneck is located in the northern Fichtelgebirge, a wooded low mountain range in northeastern Bavaria. The Herbstkirchweih invites visitors to experience customs, regional cuisine, and the friendly atmosphere of a Franconian market town, embedded in the nature of the Fichtelgebirge Nature Park.
The Sparnecker Herbstkirchweih 2026 is expected to be celebrated on Sunday, September 27, 2026 – traditionally on the Sunday before Michaeli (September 29). In the town center of the market town of Sparneck, traders will offer a diverse range of goods at the Kräermarkt. Kirchweih festivities with gastronomy, Franconian beer service, and the convivial gathering of the village community will characterize the day. The exact program points and times will be announced by the market town of Sparneck before the Kirchweih.
Sparneck is located in the Hof district, accessible via the A9 (Münchberg/Gefrees exit) and state roads towards Münchberg/Zell. The event takes place in the town center.
Admission to the Kräermarkt and Kirchweih is free; food, drinks, and market goods are subject to payment.
Sunday before Michaeli (September 29); in 2026, likely Sunday, September 27.
