May Day Festival at the City Bridge for Democracy and Solidarity
The Brückenfest Frankfurt (Oder) is the annual May Day celebration in the largest city in eastern Brandenburg. Instead of a classic Volksfest (public festival), the event combines politics, culture, and socialising into an explicit democratic commitment. The venue is the Brückenplatz directly on the Stadtbrücke Frankfurt-Słubice (Frankfurt-Słubice City Bridge), which has connected Germany and Poland for centuries.
The motto “MACH DICH STARK" stands for a clear commitment: “with us | for democracy | for social justice | against racism...". Over 30 organisations from the Frankfurt (Oder) region and the Oder-Spree district participate in the festival – trade unions, political parties, associations, religious communities, and civil society initiatives.
Political parties such as Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, SPD, Die Linke, CDU, and BSW operate information booths, as do trade unions like DGB and ver.di, and numerous associations. For food, there's something for everyone: Bratwurst, Currywurst, Langos, and Gyros, along with waffles, crêpes, beer, and non-alcoholic drinks. The CineStar Frankfurt (Oder) opens its accessible toilets for festival visitors.
With around 57,000 inhabitants, Frankfurt (Oder) is the fifth-largest city in Brandenburg and home to the Europa-Universität Viadrina. Its location directly on the Polish border and its close connection with Słubice make the city a meeting place for Germans and Poles. The Brückenfest symbolically honours this bond.
The Brückenfest 2026 begins on May 1st at 10 AM with a ceremonial opening by the Frankfurt Fanfare Guard and welcome speeches from the May Day Committee and the ver.di trade union. The day's program combines political speeches, participatory activities, and concerts in an open festival atmosphere for families and activists.
Highlights include the participatory Zumba session at 3 PM and the main concert by the East German rock band Die Zunft starting at 5 PM. Over 30 organisations will have booths, and the catering ranges from Bratwurst to Langos, covering the entire spectrum. The festival concludes at 7 PM.
