The Seastadt's traditional Volksfest since 1852
When Wilhelm-Kaisen-Platz next to the Stadthalle transforms into a sea of lights with carousels, a Ferris wheel, and show booths, it's Freimarkt time in Bremerhaven. For ten days, the Seastadt celebrates its major Volksfest with thrilling rides, cozy festival tents, and the entire culinary repertoire of a North German funfair – from roasted almonds and love apples to Schmalzkuchen (lard cakes) and Bratwurst (sausages). The square is fragrant, illuminated, and buzzing, with the whole city out and about.
The history of funfairs in Bremerhaven dates back a long way. In the 19th century, when the young port city was founded, a market permit from the Bremen Senate was needed. The first Bremerhaven Freimarkt eventually took place in August 1852 on the present-day Theodor-Heuss-Platz – at that time still strongly influenced by trade, long before thrilling rides existed. Over the decades, this trade market evolved into the Volksfest that the Seastadt knows and loves today. With its 172nd edition in 2026, the Freimarkt ranks among the oldest Volksfeste in Northern Germany.
Firm highlights include the fireworks display that illuminates the sky over the Seastadt, as well as the Family Day with reduced prices on rides – ideal for a trip with children. Admission to the grounds is free, allowing everyone to stroll, browse, and feast. Visitors to Bremerhaven in late summer should not miss this mix of maritime Hanseatic city atmosphere and classic funfair entertainment.
From August 21st to 30th, 2026, Wilhelm-Kaisen-Platz will transform for ten days into the Seastadt's major Volksfest. Carousels, a Ferris wheel, show booths, and festival tents will create a funfair atmosphere, complemented by the traditional fireworks display and a Family Day with reduced prices. Admission to the grounds is free.
The 172nd Bremerhaven Freimarkt – the Seastadt's most important late-summer Volksfest – will transform Wilhelm-Kaisen-Platz next to the Stadthalle into a funfair site for ten days from August 21st to 30th, 2026. Organizer: Arbeitsgemeinschaft Bremerhavener Märkte e.V. The organizer will announce the daily program details (Family Day, fireworks) shortly before the festival date on jahrmarkt-bremerhaven.de – the tried-and-tested schedule for decades:
Traditionally, during the ten festival days, there will be a large fireworks display over the festival grounds on one of the evenings (usually a Friday or Saturday) – the exact date will be announced by the organizer in advance.
As in previous years, a Family Day will be offered (usually on a weekday during the festival week, often Wednesday): reduced prices will apply at participating rides and food stalls – the ideal opportunity for a family outing.
Admission to the festival grounds is free. Rides and stalls are paid for individually on site. Savings tip: on Family Day (exact date to be announced by the organizer), there are reduced prices at many rides and food stalls. Travel via Bremerhaven main station with a short walk to the Stadthalle.
Wilhelm-Kaisen-Platz is centrally located next to the Stadthalle Bremerhaven and is easily accessible by bus and train. Due to the large crowds, arriving by public transport is recommended.
Admission to the Freimarkt grounds is free. Costs are incurred only for rides and stalls.
During the Freimarkt, a fireworks display is usually part of the program; a Family Day offers reduced prices. Exact dates and opening hours are announced by the City of Bremerhaven before the festival.
