Ellingstedt is a small municipality in the southern Amt Arensharde, located southwest of Schleswig in the district of Schleswig-Flensburg. Like many villages in Schleswig-Holstein, local life here is largely driven by voluntary clubs — and the Volunteer Fire Brigade plays a central role. Its annual Feuerwehrfest in the Sporthalle Op de Wohm is more than just a club celebration: it is the sociable highlight of the winter calendar, where the village community comes together.

Sporthalle Op de Wohm — Meeting Point for the Whole Village

The Sporthalle Op de Wohm is Ellingstedt's most important event venue. For the Feuerwehrfest, it is transformed into a festive hall — with long tables, stages for honours and speeches, a buffet with hot dishes, drinks and sweets, and music for dancing. Neighbours from the surrounding villages of Amt Arensharde and former members of the brigade also like to come to round off the year.

Commitment and Volunteerism

The Ellingstedt Volunteer Fire Brigade serves the community around the clock — and symbolises the voluntary commitment that holds the small communities of Schleswig-Holstein together. At the Feuerwehrfest, long-serving members are honoured, new comrades are introduced, and the tasks for the coming year are outlined. The festival is traditionally open to non-members who are connected to the club.

Ellingstedt and the World Heritage Site Danewerk

Ellingstedt borders the Danewerk, the Viking-age fortification system that, together with Haithabu, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018. Visitors to the Feuerwehrfest can combine their trip with a walk along the ramparts — an impressive experience even in winter.
