Traditional sailing regatta on the Breeger Bodden
The Saalhundregatta has been held in Breege for over two decades and is one of the best-known Bodden regattas in northern Rügen. The name refers to the Saalhund, a historical boat type and nickname for the small, often wooden boats of the Bodden fishermen. Today, yachts, dinghies, and smaller keelboats start according to Yardstick rating, allowing dissimilar boats to compete fairly.
The small, sheltered Breege Harbour is located on the Wittow peninsula, at the northern end of Rügen, and opens onto the Breeger Bodden. With south-westerly winds, it offers ideal conditions for a short, fast regatta — the course runs along the Bodden and island shorelines. Spectators have a good view of the entire event from the harbour.
The Saalhundregatta is part of a whole weekend programme of Breege Harbour Days and the Day of the Sea Rescue Services with the DGzRS. There is a festival tent area at the harbour, live music, market stalls with regional smoked fish, sea buckthorn products, and crafts from the island, as well as demonstrations by the rescue services. Breege belongs to the municipality of Breege in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen (state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern) and thrives on gentle tourism around Juliusruh beach and Cape Arkona.
The 2026 Saalhundregatta is the XXIV edition and, as usual, is integrated into a two-day event at Breege Harbour. The Skippers' Meeting will take place on Saturday at 1:00 PM, and the start is scheduled for 2:00 PM on the Breeger Bodden. The competition is based on Yardstick rating, allowing dissimilar boat types to compete fairly.
After the finish line around 5:00 PM, the day concludes in the festival tent, with the award ceremony scheduled for around 7:00 PM. Live music and dancing will accompany the evening. On Sunday, July 26, the Day of the Sea Rescue Services will follow with demonstrations by the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) — a programme that makes Breege Harbour attractive even for non-sailors.
Registration for the regatta is possible via the Breege Information Office. Current programme: breege.de.
Admission to the harbour festival and the Day of the Sea Rescue Services is free. Food and drinks in the festival tent are paid for individually.
