Annual festival celebrating Bertolt Brecht's birthday at the Literaturforum im Brecht-Haus and partner institutions in Berlin
The Brecht House at Chausseestraße 125 in Berlin-Mitte is the last residence of Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigel. Today, the listed building houses a memorial site and the Literaturforum im Brecht-Haus, which organizes readings, discussions, and workshops on Brecht and contemporary literature throughout the year. Every year in February – around February 10th, Brecht's birthday (1898) – the Literaturforum organizes the Brecht Days as an annual festival focusing on a changing thematic emphasis.
The motto for the 2026 Brecht Days is 'The Earth, the Great Nourisher. Brecht's Green Revolution'. The focus is on Brecht's little-known agrarian texts – primarily the didactic song 'The Education of Hirse', the play 'The Days of the Commune', and his engagement with Soviet agricultural planning. These texts are discussed in relation to current eco-socialist debates: How can we rethink agriculture, food, and climate in the 21st century? Guest speakers include, among others, the US eco-socialists Troy Vettese and Drew Pendergrass (authors of 'Half-Earth Socialism').
The project management for the 2026 Brecht Days is led by Hans-Christian von Herrmann (TU Berlin) and Alexander Karschnia. Partner organizations include the Network for Natural Knowledge at the Museum für Naturkunde Berlin, the Zeiss-Großplanetarium, the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, the TU Berlin Institute for Literary Studies, and the artist collective andcompany&Co. Events will take place depending on the theme at the Literaturforum, in the auditorium of the Museum für Naturkunde (Invalidenstraße 43), at the Futurium (Alexanderufer 2), and at the Zeiss-Großplanetarium (Prenzlauer Allee 80).
The festival combines opening lectures, readings, film series, performances, and workshops. The 2026 edition includes a three-part Soviet film series on the 'scientific-technical revolution', an opening lecture on 'The Education of Hirse', workshops on fermentation and agrarian literature, and a theatrical reading with andcompany&Co. Ticket prices range from €6 to €10 per event, with some lectures accessible free of charge.
The 2026 edition of the Brecht Days focuses on Brecht's engagement with agriculture, food, and the natural order. The starting point is the didactic song 'The Education of Hirse', which Brecht wrote in 1949/50, inspired by Soviet agrarian poetry. From there, the festival extends to current eco-socialist debates: How can Brecht's dialectical method be productively applied to green politics in the 21st century?
The choice of partner venues is programmatic. At the Museum für Naturkunde, natural sciences and Brecht's 'naive' observation enter into dialogue. The Futurium explores future visions. At the Zeiss-Großplanetarium, Brecht's didactic play tradition is paired with the oldest planetarium in Berlin. The opening lecture on February 9th at the Brecht House marks the thematic start.
