Around 140 stalls around St. Blasii Cathedral and Dankwarderode Castle – one of Lower Saxony's most beautiful Christmas markets with Mumme mulled wine and handicrafts
The Braunschweig Christmas Market boasts one of the most impressive backdrops a German Christmas market can offer: Framed by St. Blasii Cathedral, Dankwarderode Castle, and the famous 12th-century Braunschweig Lion, a historically festive ensemble is created over five weeks, uniquely combining tradition and atmosphere.
The market classically features everything that belongs to a large Northern German Christmas market: handicrafts from the Ore Mountains and the region (nutcrackers, candle arches, wooden nativity scenes, glass baubles), regional specialties, and diverse gastronomy.
A specialty: Mumme mulled wine, brewed with the typical Braunschweig Mumme. Accompanied by kale with Bregenwurst sausage, fried dough pastries, candied almonds, crêpes, Feuerzangenbowle (mulled wine with rum), and many other classics.
Throughout the entire duration, free children's and cultural programs are offered on the market stage: children's choirs, brass ensembles, storytelling, craft activities, and performances by local initiatives.
The market is open Mon–Sat 10 AM–9 PM, Sundays and public holidays 11 AM–9 PM. Closed on December 24th and 25th.
The 2026 edition starts on Wednesday, November 25th, and runs until Tuesday, December 29th, 2026. The unusually long operating window until after Christmas is a special feature of the Braunschweig Christmas Market – at most other locations, the market ends on December 23rd.
The market is closed only on Christmas Eve (Dec 24th) and Christmas Day (Dec 25th). From December 26th to 29th, the market remains open for the days between the years.
