Brandenburg an der Havel – The Cradle of the March

Brandenburg an der Havel is one of the oldest cities in Northern Germany and gave the entire state of Brandenburg its name. With the Cathedral Island, the Neustadt, and the Old Town – all located on their own islands in the Havel river – the city is one of the most scenically attractive medium-sized cities in the region. The brick Gothic architecture of St. Catherine's Church, the Cathedral, and the Old Town Hall shapes the cityscape. During Advent, the city becomes a radiant Advent ambiance – the Christmas market on Neustädtischer Markt is the most compact and most visited form of this light.

Main Christmas Market on Neustädtischer Markt

The organizer of the Christmas market is the Brandenburg an der Havel Trade Association. For over five weeks – from the end of November to the end of December – 44 stalls present gift ideas, regional specialties, mulled wine, and Christmas treats. The selection ranges from handcrafted ceramics and woodwork to wool products, Brandenburg honey varieties, and wines. The Christmas stage in the center of the market offers a dense cultural program – from choirs and brass quartets to theater groups.

Artificial Ice Rink as a Family Magnet

A special feature of the Brandenburg Christmas Market is the artificial ice rink with skate rental, which is set up directly on the market square. Children and adults skate their laps between the market stalls – a rare combination of mulled wine atmosphere and winter sports. Santa Claus visits daily and distributes small gifts to the children. Free admission to the entire market, skate rental and ice rink for a fee.

Opening Hours and Advent Atmosphere

The market is open Monday to Thursday from 11 am to 8 pm, Friday and Saturday from 11 am to 9 pm, and Sunday from 12 pm to 8 pm. The market is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and also on December 25th; it reopens from December 26th to December 30th. A visit can be ideally combined with a walk on the Cathedral Island, a concert in St. Catherine's Church, or an Advent boat trip on the Havel.
