Chamber music in the spirit of Johannes Brahms – main location Heide in Dithmarschen
Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg in 1833 – the composer's geographical connection to the North German region was the basis for founding the Brahms Society Schleswig-Holstein in 1997. For almost three decades, it has curated the festival of the same name, which brings top-class chamber music to the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein every spring and early summer – with Heide in Dithmarschen as its anchor.
The Brahms Society is based in the former district town of Heide in the Dithmarschen district. Two venues characterize the concerts in Heide: the late Gothic St. Jürgen's Church on the market square with its historic Marcussen organ, and the Klaus Groth Museum on the Lüttenheid museum island, dedicated to the Low German poet and Brahms contemporary. Both locations offer intimate spaces for the chamber music concentration that distinguishes the festival.
The festival is neither a pure Brahms monologue nor a classical potpourri. It places Brahms in relation to his role models (J.S. Bach, Beethoven, Schubert), contemporaries (Schumann, Joachim), and successors (from late Romanticism to Modernism). Renowned ensembles and soloists – often with connections to the NDR Elbphilharmonie or the Mandelring Quartet – perform regularly.
A highlight of the festival calendar is the awarding of the Brahms Prize of the Brahms Society Schleswig-Holstein, endowed with 10,000 euros – one of the most prestigious awards for chamber music in the German-speaking world. In 2026, the prize will be awarded to the Mandelring Quartet. The award ceremony traditionally takes place in Wesselburen.
Visitors to the Brahms Weeks get to know not only great music but also a region that often stands in the shadow of Sylt and the Bay of Lübeck in terms of tourism: Dithmarschen with its marsh villages, the Eider estuary, and the North Sea in close proximity. Heide itself has one of the largest market squares in Germany and is easily accessible via the Marschbahn (Hamburg-Westerland) railway line.
The festival, in its 30th year (founded 1997), returns to Heide. Three of the main concerts in the 2026 season calendar will take place in Heide, Dithmarschen, supplemented by other dates in Wesselburen, Büsum, and Neuenkirchen. The Brahms Society will publish the program at the end of 2025.
