Smart City Week in the Hamm800 Anniversary Year — "Experience, Participate, Understand"
The city of Hamm is celebrating its 800th anniversary in 2026. As part of the Hamm800 anniversary year, the Digital Days Hamm will focus on the topic of Smart City and digitalization for a week in early June – integrated into the nationwide Digital Day initiative. Motto 2026: "Experience, Participate, Understand — into the next 800 years."
The highlight of the week is the premiere of the "Heimat Hamm" app on June 15, 2026. The augmented reality application guides you through 800 years of city history: interactive storytelling stations, mini-games, and superimposed historical views at real locations. Hamm thus combines the city anniversary with modern educational and tourism technology.
The Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences (HSHL) brings its mobile science laboratory Lab-on-Tour to the city center. The accessible science truck presents driving simulators, light tunnels, and interactive experiments. Target groups: pupils, families, seniors – the inhibition threshold towards technology is deliberately lowered.
On June 15, the Mayor of Hamm opens his AnsprechBar: an open consultation hour where Hamm residents can directly contribute questions, ideas, and suggestions regarding the city's Smart City strategy. The format is in the spirit of Administration 4.0: digital citizen participation at eye level.
Accompanying the week is the podcast project "Hamm800 Digital": Hamm citizens can submit their stories, memories, and visions for the city anniversary. The contributions are compiled editorially and published throughout the anniversary season.
The program lines cover the breadth of digital transformation: Smart City strategy, cybersecurity, AI applications, therapy innovations, virtual reality, digital economy, e-government, climate and digitalization. Workshops are curated for different target groups – from senior workshops on smartphone usage to cybersecurity sessions for entrepreneurs.
Hamm has around 180,000 inhabitants and is located in the eastern Ruhr area, at the transition to Münsterland. The city was shaped by mining for decades and has been undergoing comprehensive structural change since the 1990s – Smart City initiatives, university expansion (HSHL), and the digital economy are among the focal points of this repositioning. The Digital Days are a showcase of this transformation.
The 2026 edition combines the national Digital Day with Hamm's city anniversary. Over eight days, workshops, showcases, and citizen formats will take place at various locations in the city – city center, HSHL, City Hall.
