Traditional centuries-old market in Boppard with rides, children's program, music, and gastronomy
The Bopparder Zwiebelmarkt is one of the oldest traditional events in the World Heritage city on the Middle Rhine. From September 11th to 12th, 2026, the market will transform Boppard's city center into a Volksfest (popular festival) with rides, a children's program, live music, and gastronomy.
The market owes its unusual name to an old tradition: In the past, onion sellers from a Rhine island came to Boppard by ship to offer their harvest. Over the centuries, this original trading event has developed into a full-fledged Volksfest that is firmly anchored in the city's event calendar.
The Bopparder Zwiebelmarkt is one of the most traditional festivals in the UNESCO World Heritage city on the Middle Rhine. With centuries of history, it is one of the firm pillars of Boppard's event calendar and attracts thousands of visitors annually from the entire Middle Rhine and Rhine-Moselle region.
Its unusual name refers to the historical function of the market: In the past, onion sellers from a Rhine island came to Boppard by ship and offered their onion harvest on a fixed autumn date. The island — presumably one of the numerous small islands in the Rhine near Boppard or slightly downstream — was known for onion cultivation; the mild climate of the Middle Rhine and the fertile floodplains offered good conditions. Although this original trading event has disappeared over the centuries, it has preserved its name and date in Boppard's collective memory.
Today, the Zwiebelmarkt has moved far away from its original agricultural character and has become a full-fledged Volksfest. Boppard's city center, with its historic market square, the St. Severus Church, half-timbered houses, and the Rhine promenade, forms a picturesque backdrop for a two-day festival with an extensive program.
The program elements include rides for younger and older visitors (carousel, children's carousel, shooting galleries, small highlight rides), a dedicated children's program with hands-on activities and crafts, live music on a stage with regional bands from the rock, pop, folk, and dialect music genres, as well as a diverse gastronomic offer. Onion specialties are a must here — Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), onion soup, Maultaschen with fried onions, and other variations honor the festival's name.
The offer is complemented by classic festival foods — Bratwurst, fries, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), crêpes — and the entire spectrum of Middle Rhine wines. Middle Rhine vintners from Boppard and the neighboring Bopparder Hamm present their wines at several stands and use the festival to introduce their current vintages to a broad audience.
With its traditional date on the second weekend of September, the Zwiebelmarkt falls into a season that is particularly attractive for the region: late summer on the Rhine, the beginning of the grape harvest, mild weather — ideal conditions for an open-air Volksfest.
On Friday, September 11th, and Saturday, September 12th, 2026, the traditional Bopparder Zwiebelmarkt invites you once again to the World Heritage city on the Middle Rhine. Rides, a children's program, live music from regional bands, onion specialties, and Middle Rhine wines form the framework for a two-day Volksfest in the heart of Boppard's city center.
The 2026 edition continues the centuries-old tradition of the Zwiebelmarkt. Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart), onion soup, and other variations honor the festival's name; Bratwurst, Reibekuchen (potato pancakes), and Middle Rhine wines complement the gastronomic offer.
On stage, regional bands provide musical entertainment, while hands-on activities and crafts are available for children. The picturesque setting of Boppard's old town with its half-timbered houses and St. Severus Church gives the festival its unique character.
