Volkslauf (people's run) on German Unity Day in Bismarck's birthplace Schönhausen (Elbe)
Schönhausen an der Elbe in the Stendal district (state of Saxony-Anhalt) has a great name in German history: Otto von Bismarck, the later Reich Chancellor, was born here in 1815. His birthplace, the Bismarck Museum, and the castle shape the town. For decades, the Bismarck Memorial Run has been held here on October 3rd – German Unity Day – one of the classics of the regional running calendar.
You run on an honest, slightly undulating course through the fields and meadows along the Elbe. Two distances are offered: the 13 km main run for ambitious amateur runners and the 6.5 km short run as an introductory route. In addition, there are children's and youth runs. The Bismarck Memorial Run is one of the scoring events for the Elbe-Ohre-Cup, a regional cup series in the northern Altmark. Afterwards, the cake buffet and the award ceremony await in the sports club house.
Classic Volkslauf (people's run) rhythm: registration and bib collection from approx. 8:30 AM, joint start of all distances at 10:00 AM. The 13 km course leads through the Elbe meadows, the 6.5 km short run stays close to the town. Afterwards, award ceremony, cake buffet, and cup standings discussion in the sports club house.
