Ornithological tours in Schleswig-Holstein's largest nature reserve (mainland)
The Beltringharder Koog is the largest nature reserve in Schleswig-Holstein on the mainland. Dyked in 1991 as the youngest Koog on the North Sea coast, it was deliberately not developed for agriculture but dedicated to nature conservation. Today, the 33.5 km² Koog is located in the municipality of Reußenköge (Nordfriesland district, Schleswig-Holstein state) and is one of the most important resting and breeding grounds for waders and water birds on the German North Sea coast.
In spring, up to 80,000 Brent geese rest here on their journey from France and the Netherlands to the Siberian tundra. In autumn, thousands of waders, ducks, avocets, and spoonbills are sighted. Birds of prey such as white-tailed eagles and short-eared owls hunt over the salt marshes. The diversity of birds makes the Beltringharder Koog one of Northern Germany's outstanding birdwatching spots.
The Schutzstation Wattenmeer e.V. operates a permanent base at the Koog with its Integrierten Station Westküste. From March to September 2026, bird watching tours will take place several times a week — timed differently depending on the season, intensive in spring and autumn (during migration), and sporadic in midsummer:
The meeting point for all tours is the Info-Pavillon Lüttmoorsiel, Beltringharder Koog 4, 25821 Reußenköge. The tours usually last two to four hours; a spotting scope is provided, and your own binoculars are welcome. Some tours are designed as guided bike tours — bring your own bike or rent one on site.
Schutzstation Wattenmeer is one of the oldest and best-known nature conservation organisations in Northern Germany. The bird watching tours are not just tourist offerings but part of a broader educational and awareness mission — visitors are meant to learn about the importance of the UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea and its protected areas. The Beltringharder Koog is part of this conservation area.
The 2026 season starts in mid-March, as the first waders and Brent geese return from the south. Bird watching tours run several times a week until the end of September, adapted to the seasonally changing bird populations in the Koog.
The programme includes classic bird watching with binoculars and spotting scopes, guided bike tours through the Koog, family tours for children, and special thematic tours (e.g., during the avocet breeding season or the autumn migration).
