Mittelbaden Village Festival with an Italian Accent

Bietigheim — not to be confused with the town of the same name, Bietigheim-Bissingen in the Ludwigsburg district near Stuttgart — is a municipality of just under 8,000 inhabitants in the Rastatt district, located between the Rhine and the Black Forest foothills. Once a year, on the first weekend of September, the village center becomes a festival zone: the Bietigheimer Dorffest transforms the main street into an open festival mile with association stands, live music, and decorated inner courtyards for two days.

Associations at the Center

Around 20 associations and groups from Bietigheim — sports clubs, music clubs, fire department, carnival clubs, church, youth, and senior organizations — shape the program. Each association runs its own stand: Schnitzel sandwiches, Flammkuchen, Spätzle, Bratwurst, cakes, ice cream, wine, beer, and coffee in a typical Baden mix. The commitment of the local associations is the backbone of the festival — and the proceeds mostly benefit social and youth projects in the community.

Italian Partner Municipality

A special feature of the Bietigheimer Dorffest is the regular participation of the Italian partner municipality. It brings Mediterranean specialties — pasta, antipasti, Italian wine, and espresso — creating an Italian-Badenese festival contrast that can be found in many Mittelbaden village festivals and goes back to the German-Italian partnership tradition of southern Württemberg and Bavaria.

Mittelbaden as a Day Trip

Bietigheim is 10 minutes from Rastatt, 20 minutes from Baden-Baden, and 30 minutes from Karlsruhe. Visitors to the village festival can combine their visit with a hike in the Murgtal valley, a swim at the Murg-Strandbad in Rastatt, or a stroll through Baden-Baden. Favorite Castle in Rastatt-Förch and the Brunnenfest in the Murg municipality of Loffenau are also attractive excursion destinations in the region.
