Bielefeld's Autumn Kirmes at the Radrennbahn — 10 days of Ferris wheel, dodgems, and haunted house
What the Cranger Kirmes is to the Ruhr area, the BIE-Happy Herbstkirmes is to Bielefeld and East Westphalia: the grand autumn Volksfest (funfair) that lets the last warm days of the year fade away with a Ferris wheel, roller coaster, dodgems, haunted house, and over forty other rides. From October 23rd to November 1st, 2026, the Radrennbahn at Heeper Straße 301 will transform into a dazzling Kirmes wonderland — with free admission, organized by the Schaustellerverein Bielefeld e.V.
The Kirmes offers the full spectrum of a German Volksfest:
Three special highlights make the BIE-Happy Herbstkirmes stand out:
The Kirmes adapts to weekdays and weekends:
The Radrennbahn on Heeper Straße is Bielefeld's most important open-air event venue. Originally built for track cycling races, it has become the prime location for Bielefeld's Kirmes scene: the spring Kirmes 'BIE-Happy Frühlingskirmes' in May and the autumn Kirmes presented here at the end of October share the grounds. With its good public transport connections (StadtBahn Line 1 to Heeper Straße) and ample parking, it's the ideal location.
With around 335,000 inhabitants, Bielefeld is the largest city in East Westphalia-Lippe — an important economic centre (with Dr. Oetker as the main employer), a university city with a campus on the A2 motorway, and a cultural hub (Stadttheater, Kunsthalle, Bunker Ulmenwall as a cultural venue). Worth seeing are the Sparrenburg castle as the landmark above the old town, the Bauernhausmuseum (Farmhouse Museum), the Bethel Foundation, and of course the university with its famous reinforced concrete architecture from the 1970s. In the Volksfest calendar, the Radrennbahn events, the Leineweber Market, and the Sparrenburg Festival shape Bielefeld's identity.
The BIE-Happy Herbstkirmes 2026 continues Bielefeld's annual autumn Volksfest. 10 days of rides, games, food, and beer gardens at the Radrennbahn. Opening fireworks, Happy Hour, and Family Day are highlights. Free admission, all attractions paid individually.
Free admission. Rides, games, and food/drinks at showman prices. Cash recommended — not all showmen accept card payments.
By Public Transport: StadtBahn Line 1 (Schildesche – Senne) to 'Heeper Straße' or 'Radrennbahn' stop, then a 5-minute walk. By Car: A2 Bielefeld-Ost motorway, follow signs. Parking around the Radrennbahn (crowded on weekends, public transport recommended).
Free admission. Rides, games, and food/drinks at standard showman prices.
Family Day on Wednesday, Oct 28th, is ideal for families with small children — less crowded than the weekend and special prices at many rides. The opening fireworks on Oct 23rd around 9 PM are a good time for photography enthusiasts. If you want to experience the Ferris wheel with its lighting effects, come after dark. Definitely plan to bring enough cash — many showmen do not accept card payments.
