Bielefeld's Free Open-Air Electronic Music Event
The Rochdale Festival is an exceptional format: a completely free open-air festival for electronic music, deliberately seeking to connect club culture with neighborhood leisure. It is organized by two Bielefeld collectives – Leises Rauschen and Teutopia e.V. – and takes place at Freiraum Rochdale, a community space in the Stieghorst district.
Saturday, May 9, 2026 · 2 PM to 10 PM
The 2026 edition opens on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The venue is Oldentruper Straße 65, 33607 Bielefeld, easily accessible via light rail line 4 (stop Sieker Mitte), followed by a five-minute walk. Free admission.
Two Stages, Eight Local DJs
Musically, the festival features local DJs from Bielefeld and Ostwestfalen. Eight acts will play electronic music on two stages – relaxed sounds during the day (Deep House, Downtempo, Lounge), and more danceable sets in the evening (House, Techno, Disco). The program follows a clear arc: from a "relaxed afternoon" to a "danceable evening atmosphere." The exact DJ lineup will be announced by Teutopia and Leises Rauschen via Instagram (@teutopia) before the festival.
Multi-Generational Concept
What sets the Rochdale Festival apart from typical electronic festivals is its multi-generational concept:
- The CVJM Bielefeld (YMCA) runs a children's program until 6 PM with a bouncy castle, craft stations, and face painting.
- The basketball courts on site are open all day for pickup games.
- The catering ranges from simple, hearty meals to popcorn, cotton candy, and affordable drinks.
- Families, teenagers, students, people in their fifties – everyone finds their place.
This mix explicitly positions the festival as a neighborhood event, not a commercial rave.
Freiraum Rochdale – A Neighborhood Space with History
Freiraum Rochdale is more than just a festival site. It is located in the eastern Bielefeld district of Stieghorst and serves the neighborhood as a meeting place, basketball court, and skate park. Its location is convenient: light rail line 4 stops directly at Sieker Mitte, from where it's just a few minutes' walk. The space hosts a variety of events, including open-air festivals, sports activities, and community gatherings.
Teutopia e.V. – Festival Collective from Bielefeld
The non-profit association Teutopia e.V. organizes several open-air events per year in Bielefeld. In addition to the Rochdale Festival, their 2026 agenda includes support for the Hermannslauf (April 26), a summer event in Ummeln (August 8), and participation in the SenneFest (September 12/21). Their ethos: organizing electronic music in a non-commercial setting – with free admission, local DJs, and a focus on the local community.
Bielefeld – City in Ostwestfalen-Lippe
With around 340,000 inhabitants, Bielefeld is the largest city in Ostwestfalen-Lippe (Detmold administrative region, North Rhine-Westphalia). The electronic music scene benefits from an active student culture (Bielefeld University, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences), several clubs (Forum, MTC, etc.), and a number of open-air initiatives. The Rochdale Festival is one of the most accessible formats within this scene.
