About Summer Concerts Berkenthin
Summer Concerts Berkenthin — edition 2026
The 2026 edition continues the proven format of the Berkenthin Summer Concerts: several Friday or weekend evenings with live music directly at the lock gate, as part of the regional KulturSommer am Kanal (Summer of Culture on the Canal) by the Foundation Duchy of Lauenburg. Start time is 8:00 PM each evening (gates open from late afternoon, picnic on the festival grounds). Free admission, hat donation for the artists.
The 2026 lineup has not yet been officially published at the time of printing. In previous years, the oboe-guitar duo Martina Brüggemann and Michael Jessen, actor Fried Wolff with his own poem settings, and singer and pianist Anna Bertram performed, among others. The wide range — from Latin and jazz to chanson, pop, classical, and rock — remains the hallmark of the series.
The dates are traditionally published on berkenthin-amt.de and stecknitzregion.de.

Concerts at the Lock Gate
The Berkenthin Summer Concerts bring summer to the Elbe-Lübeck Canal. The venue is the festival grounds at the lock in Berkenthin — a place where the water, the lock gate, and the Low German brick architecture form the stage. For several consecutive evenings, musicians perform here under the open sky; the audience sits on picnic blankets, brought folding chairs, or the surrounding steps.
Diversity Instead of Festival Format
Unlike large festival series, the Berkenthin concert sequence consciously positions itself as a chamber music summer program. The stylistic spectrum is broad: Latin and jazz, chanson and classical, pop, blues, and rock are served in various ensembles. Sometimes an oboe-guitar duo, sometimes a singer-songwriter, sometimes a quartet takes the stage — solo, duo, or small combo instead of a large open-air machinery. This is precisely where the charm lies: intimacy, personal announcements, regional artists.
Free Admission — Hat Donation for the Artists
The event series remains free for the public. The Cultural Committee asks for donations for the artists, which are collected after the concerts. Drinks are offered on site at cost price; most guests bring their own food. Picnic atmosphere instead of festival queues.
KulturSommer am Kanal (Summer of Culture on the Canal)
The Summer Concerts are part of the KulturSommer am Kanal, a regional project along the Elbe-Lübeck Canal supported by the Foundation Duchy of Lauenburg. It also includes the traditional Harbor Festival around the Salt Barge, which concludes the season at the end of July with an open-air service, a sea shanty choir, and live music.
Berkenthin and the Duchy of Lauenburg
Berkenthin is located in the Duchy of Lauenburg district in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, approximately halfway between Lübeck and Mölln. The municipality belongs to the Berkenthin office and has around 1,700 inhabitants. The Elbe-Lübeck Canal with its lock has shaped the townscape since the beginning of the 20th century — before that, the historic Stecknitz Canal, one of Northern Europe's oldest artificial waterways, flowed here. The concert series uses this maritime backdrop as a natural resonance space.
