Traditional village festival at the Bergloch in the Thuringian Rodach Valley
The Bergloch near Steinfeld in the Heldburg Land is a small natural spring basin fed by an underground source. For centuries, it has supplied the village with drinking water and has become a point of identification for the community. Today, it is located on the hiking trail between Steinfeld and the historic Veste Heldburg, the "Franconian Lighthouse," one of the most important Renaissance buildings in Thuringia.
The Berglochfest has been celebrated for generations on the last Sunday in May. It traditionally marks the beginning of the summer season and brings together the village community from Steinfeld, Heldburg, Hellingen, Eishausen, and the other districts of the municipality of Straufhain. The festival grounds directly at the Bergloch are located under old oak trees — an idyllic natural setting that many folk festivals in modern marquee landscapes cannot offer.
The Steinfeld Volunteer Fire Department organizes bratwurst, steaks, and cold beer from a regional brewery. There is coffee and homemade cake from the village women, children's games, and usually a bouncy castle, along with a small musical program — often a local brass band or an accordionist. The festival deliberately remains small, close to the village, and without large commercial structures — an authentic example of lived rural festival culture in Southern Thuringia.
The municipality of Straufhain is located in the Heldburg Land in the Hildburghausen district, a small, historically rich region between Thuringia and Bavaria. Here you will find the Veste Heldburg, the Dunkelgrafenpaar Museum, and Franconian-Thuringian customs. Visitors to the Berglochfest can complement their day with a hike to the Veste Heldburg or an exploration of the Tanzlinden (dancing lime trees).
As every year on the last Sunday in May, the village community of Straufhain municipality gathers at the festival grounds at the Bergloch in Steinfeld. The festival traditionally begins in the late morning with the beer tapping, the early morning concert runs into the afternoon, the cake stands open in the late afternoon, and the festival concludes cozily in the evening.
