Three days of beach handball tournament on the Ordinger beach of the North Sea
Beach handball is a comparatively young discipline — a faster, more acrobatic variant of indoor handball on sand: four against four, goal throws with jumps and somersaults count double, no whistle after goals, but direct flow of play. In Germany, the beaches of the North and Baltic Seas are among the most important tournament venues — Sankt Peter-Ording, with its wide, firm sand beach, is an ideal location.
The cup weekend spans three days. Friday afternoon/evening usually involves setup and the first games, Saturday is the main match day with preliminary rounds and the first finals, Sunday features semi-finals and finals. Several courts are played simultaneously, so numerous matches take place throughout the day.
Beach handball tournaments on the beach have a special atmosphere: playing fields in the sand, tents for the teams, team camps with umbrellas, music from portable speakers, spectators on the dike or at the edge of the field. In Sankt Peter-Ording, players and spectators benefit from the unique beach setting — a few meters to the North Sea, wide sky, with stilt houses on the horizon. Admission for spectators is free; games are played during the day.
The Beach Handball Cup is part of a broad event program that the Tourismus-Zentrale Sankt Peter-Ording launches every year. In 2026, the program includes the large Seebrückenfest (May 23rd), the German Youth Icelandic Horse Championship at the nearby Eichenhof Grothusenkoog (June 10th–14th), the Friedrichstädter Rosenträume (June 27th–28th), and the Beach Handball Cup (June 19th–21st) — a packed schedule that appeals equally to athletes, families, and cultural travelers.
Sankt Peter-Ording — SPO for short — is a North Sea spa town with just under 4,000 inhabitants in the district of Nordfriesland in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. With over 2 million overnight stays per year, it is one of Northern Europe's most important tourist destinations. The 12-kilometer-long sandy beach, the stilt houses, and the distinctive pier shape the landscape — the wide Ordinger beach offers ideal conditions for sand tournaments like the Beach Handball Cup.
The tournament is confirmed on the official press release of the Tourismus-Zentrale SPO (presseportal.de) as well as in the event calendar st-peter-ording.de. As in previous years, several courts will be played simultaneously over three days, with increasing tension towards the finals on Sunday.
The organizer is the Tourismus-Zentrale Sankt Peter-Ording, which hosts the cup weekend as part of its extensive summer sports program 2026.
