Mühlhausen — Centre of the German Peasants' War

Mühlhausen/Thuringia — today the largest town in the Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis district, also a "medieval imperial city" with an impressively preserved city wall — was the political and military centre of the German Peasants' War in 1525. Under Thomas Müntzer and Heinrich Pfeiffer, Mühlhausen became a revolutionary stronghold where the rebels questioned the old order. The Battle of Frankenhausen on May 15, 1525, ended the uprising bloodily — Müntzer was captured and executed shortly afterwards in Mühlhausen. This history shapes the city's identity to this day.

Open-Air Theatre in an Authentic Setting

The Peasants' War Spectacle brings this history to life: Amateur actors — many from Mühlhausen itself — embody the central historical figures in a multi-act open-air theatre on the Kleiner Blobach, a meadow directly in front of the medieval city wall. The backdrop is authentic: the preserved defensive towers and walls form the setting for the performance. Thomas Müntzer, Heinrich Pfeiffer, and the leaders of the rebels appear in historically researched costumes. The spectacle is known far beyond the borders of Thuringia and attracts thousands of visitors from all over Germany every year.

Medieval Market — Hands-on Crafts

Parallel to the open-air theatre, historical craftspeople set up an authentic medieval market in front of the city wall: papermakers, blacksmiths, shoemakers, felt makers, instrument makers, soap boilers, stonemasons. The craftspeople demonstrate their activities live — children can participate, and adults can buy or order crafted items. Combat demonstrations complement the programme: knights, mercenaries, and rebels demonstrate with historical weapons what battles looked like in the 16th century.

Child-Friendly and Suitable for Families

An important pillar of the concept is its family orientation: Children up to 13 years old have free admission, the programme includes hands-on activities, children's theatre workshops, and simple sword fights for young visitors. The city of Mühlhausen explicitly promotes the spectacle as a family experience, not just an event for adults. In the state of Thuringia, Unstrut-Hainich-Kreis district, the spectacle is one of the most important cultural tourism dates in May.
