Patronage festival of Saint Bartholomew — Franconian Kerwa tradition in the Franconian Switzerland
The Kirchweih, called "Kerwa" or "Kerwa" in Franconian dialect, is an integral part of the customs in Franconian Switzerland. In Pottenstein, the patronage festival refers to Saint Bartholomew, whose feast day is August 24th. The Bartholomäus-Kirchweih has been held in almost unchanged form for generations and is one of the most vibrant Kerwa traditions in Bavaria.
The focus is on the ritualized unearthing and burying of the Kerwa by the "Kerwaburschen" — young men from the village who "dig up" the festival symbol (a straw doll or the symbolic Kerwa figure) from the ground at the beginning and "bury" it again at the end of the festival so that it can "resurrect" next year. In parallel, the Kirchweih tree is erected with traditional rituals.
A special tradition of the Pottensteiner Kerwa is "Den Betzn austanzen" — a round dance in which the Kerwaburschen dance for a live ram ("Betzn") as a prize. The winner wins the animal, which is traditionally consumed at the festival feast afterwards. A rustic, earthy tradition that many festival visitors perceive as typically Franconian.
The festival venue is the courtyard of the Mager brewery, a traditional private brewery in Pottenstein. A special festival beer brewed exclusively for the Kerwa is served here. Franconian specialties (Bratwurst, Schäuferla, carp, roast pork) are part of the gastronomic offerings.
Pottenstein is a small town in the Bayreuth district in Franconian Switzerland, with about 1,000 inhabitants in the main town, known for the Teufelshöhle (Devil's Cave) and the nearby rocks. Its location in a narrow valley between rocks gives the festival grounds a special atmosphere.
The exact dates for the Bartholomäus-Kirchweih 2026 will be finalized by the town of Pottenstein and the Mager brewery traditionally in early summer. The festival framework has remained unchanged for generations: four days around the patronage day of Saint Bartholomew with the unearthing/burying of the Kerwa, festival beer brewing, Betzn dance, and Franconian festival fare.
