Platform of the Latin American Berlin diaspora with around 100 artists in October
Berlin is home to one of the largest Latin American diasporas in Europe: around 70,000 people from Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, and many other countries live in the capital. Barrio | Bairro Berlin (Spanish/Portuguese for 'neighborhood'), first held in 2024, is the festival of this community – not a folklore format, but a literarily and intellectually demanding platform.
The festival utilizes many formats simultaneously: readings by well-known voices from the Latin American literary scene, performances by young diaspora artists, panels on topics such as memory, migration, and colonial heritage, workshops on creative writing and translation, archive research in the collections of the Ibero-American Institute, sound rituals, city walks tracing Latin American stories in Berlin, and finally parties that round off the program with DJ sets of Latin Electronica and Cumbia.
The festival is decidedly decentralized. Main venues are the Ibero-American Institute on Potsdamer Straße in the Mitte district – Europe's largest research library for Central and South America – and the Peruvian Embassy on Taubenstraße. In addition, there are rotating partner locations: bookstores, galleries, cultural centers in Mitte, Kreuzberg, Wedding, and Neukölln. An interactive map on the website documents past, present, and future Latin American events in Berlin.
Among the defining voices of past editions were Timo Berger, Ricardo Domeneck, Martha Gantier, Elsye Suquilanda – writers, translators, performance artists who commute between Berlin and Latin America or live entirely in Berlin. Further voices are invited for 2026 (3rd edition); the complete program will be published in the summer of 2026. The festival is supported, among others, by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds.
Exact dates will be published in summer 2026 on barrioberlin.de. Based on experience, the festival runs for several weeks, with highlights on specific event days.
