Bamberg's Grand Carnival Parade on Shrove Tuesday
The Bamberg Carnival Parade is the highlight of the Franconian carnival season in the Upper Franconian bishop's city. Unlike the Rhenish carnival strongholds, Bamberg has a Franconian character — this makes the parade more family-friendly, smaller-scale, but no less imaginative. It is organised by Stadtmarketing Bamberg in coordination with local carnival clubs, the Bamberg BRK Rose Monday Ball, and the guards.
For the 2026 season, Stadtmarketing, together with the Bamberg Red Cross Ball, has proclaimed a joint motto: "Glamour and Glitter – Dance with us across the red carpet to the masked ball!". On February 14th (Carnival Saturday), the traditional Red Cross Ball in the Ziegelbau will open Bamberg's carnival week under this motto, followed by the parade through the city centre on Tuesday.
On Shrove Tuesday at 1:33 PM, the parade sets off. Around 50 carnival floats, walking groups, clubs, guards, drum groups, and brass bands parade through Bamberg's city centre from the starting point. Participating: the reigning Bamberg Prince and Princess, Funkenmariechen (sparkle maids), carnival guards, and creatively costumed citizens. Sweets and confetti rain the route.
The special charm of the Bamberg Carnival Parade lies in its backdrop: the parade moves through a perfectly preserved medieval and baroque old town, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Half-timbered houses, the Old Town Hall on the island in the Regnitz river, and Bamberg Cathedral form the backdrop for a scene that is unique elsewhere. Bamberg is the main town of the district of the same name and an independent city with around 79,000 inhabitants in Upper Franconia.
Groups, clubs, and private groups can register for the parade with Stadtmarketing Bamberg. The registration deadline is traditionally at the end of January; the registration form is available at mybamberg.de.
On Shrove Tuesday, February 17, 2026, the Bamberg Carnival Parade will set off punctually at 1:33 PM. The parade starts in Neue Straße and leads via Hauptstraße – Ringstraße – Kirchgasse through Bamberg's city centre. Around 50 creatively designed floats, walking groups, guards, clubs, and brass bands will participate, led by the Bamberg Prince and Princess.
This year's motto, proclaimed jointly with the Bamberg Red Cross Ball, is: "Glamour and Glitter – Dance with us across the red carpet to the masked ball!". The parade is part of the entire carnival week, which opens with the Red Cross Ball on February 14th in the Ziegelbau.
