Four-day folk festival in the glassmaking community of Frauenau
The Auerer Kirwa commemorates the completion and consecration of the parish church of St. Mary's Ascension in Frauenau in 1767. The church, one of the most beautiful Baroque church buildings in the Bavarian Forest, has given its name to the festival ever since. Over more than two centuries, the church consecration date has evolved into a four-day folk festival that is known far beyond the municipal borders.
Each of the festival days has its own character: Friday opens the Kirwa with the participation of local businesses and brass music. Saturday is aimed at seniors and complements the program with a vintage car meeting. Sunday is the most important festival day with a market, morning pint (Frühschoppen), and an evening musical program. Monday is dedicated to children and guests and is about fostering neighborly relations.
Frauenau is a municipality in the Regen district (Lower Bavaria, AGS 09276) with a long tradition as a glassmaking center. The Frauenau Glass Museum documents the history of glass production in the Bavarian Forest, and the neighboring Glasdorf Weinfurtner attracts visitors from all over Germany. The community is located at the foot of the Rachel (1,452 m), one of the highest mountains in the inner Bavarian Forest, which shapes the landscape.
Unlike many folk festivals whose dates are oriented towards the last weekend of a particular month, the Auerer Kirwa is based on August 15th (Feast of the Assumption): it always begins on the Friday following this feast day. In 2026, the Feast of the Assumption falls on a Saturday, so the Kirwa will start on Friday, August 21st, and conclude on Monday, August 24th.
The festival is supported by a consortium of several local clubs: TSV Frauenau (Sports Club), Heimatverein Frauenau (Preservation of Traditions), and TC Frauenau (Tennis Club). This distribution of responsibility guarantees a diverse program — from traditional brass music to modern dance nights.
The Auerer Kirwa 2026 opens its gates in Frauenau on Friday, August 21st, 2026. Local businesses and brass bands kick off the festivities. On Saturday, August 22nd, an afternoon for seniors and a vintage car rally cater to different generations.
Festival Sunday, August 23rd, is the main festival day with a market in the morning, a Frühschoppen (morning pint), lunch, and a musical evening program. Festival Monday, August 24th, concludes the festivities with a family program and a long tradition of good neighborliness: clubs from surrounding communities visit the festival grounds and celebrate the end of the Kirwa week together.
A detailed program overview with band names will be published by the organizing clubs on the official channels shortly before the event.
Free admission. Costs only for food and drinks in the festival tent, and possibly for amusement rides on the edge of the festival grounds.
