Largest Volksfest on the Bavarian Lower Main — eleven days of Volksfest with opening and closing fireworks in front of Johannisburg Castle, approx. 500,000 visitors
Aschaffenburg is the largest city on the Bavarian Lower Main — administrative seat of the district, cultural center with Johannisburg Castle (grand Renaissance building made of red Main sandstone, built 1605-1614) and the collegiate church of St. Peter and Alexander. The city with its approximately 71,000 inhabitants has a tradition as a former residential city of the Mainz Electors. The Volksfest takes up this representative tradition and makes the castle the festive backdrop.
The Volksfestplatz by the Main is located directly below Johannisburg Castle, on the banks of the Main. This topographic arrangement — Volksfest directly on the river, the mighty Renaissance castle as a background backdrop — is one of the most impressive festive backdrops in Southern Germany. The festival grounds cover 40,000 m² and accommodate 71 showmen, hosts, and amusement ride operators.
One of the trademarks of the Aschaffenburger Volksfest are the two fireworks displays: the opening fireworks on Friday, June 19th at 10:30 PM and the closing fireworks on Monday, June 29th at 10:30 PM. Both are launched from the banks of the Main across the river and use Johannisburg Castle as an architectural highlight. Thousands of Aschaffenburg residents and tourists gather on the opposite bank of the Main for a clear view.
A second highlight is the parade on Saturday, June 20th at 3:00 PM through Aschaffenburg's city center to the festival grounds. Traditional costume groups, music bands, marksmen, brewery floats, and showmen — one of the largest Volksfest parades on the Bavarian Lower Main.
The large Festzelt Widmann is the gastronomic center of the festival. Heylands beer, a local Aschaffenburg beer with a long tradition, is served. Host Widmann is an Aschaffenburg institution. In addition, there are smaller beer tents, beer gardens, amusement rides, food stalls, and a "Public Viewing" area for the 2026 Football World Cup matches on a large screen.
As a cultural highlight, there will be a performance by Bavarian political cabaret artist Urban Priol on Sunday, June 21st — a native of Aschaffenburg, one of Germany's sharpest political satirists, veteran of the ARD show "Neues aus der Anstalt." A program item that sets the Aschaffenburger Volksfest apart from most other Volksfests in Bavaria.
The 2026 edition is confirmed via the Aschaffenburg event calendar (mein.aschaffenburg.de) and the Feuerwerk-Fanpage portal (feuerwerk-fanpage.de/feuerwerkstermine/aschaffenburg-volksfest/) as well as the German Volksfeste directory for June 19-29, 2026.
Detailed times for individual program items (parade assembly, concerts in Festzelt Widmann, Public Viewing dates for the 2026 Football World Cup, showman specials) will be published in the weeks before the Volksfest on the city website and on mein.aschaffenburg.de. Host Widmann operates the main beer tent.
