Traditional patron saint's festival around the Antoniuskapelle in the Lebach district
The Antoniuskirmes is the annual patron saint's festival of the small district of Niedersaubach, which belongs to the town of Lebach in the Saarlouis district. The patron saint is Saint Anthony of Padua, to whom the Antoniuskapelle in the middle of the village is dedicated. As summer approaches, Peter-Adam-Platz transforms into a meeting point for the village community for a weekend.
The day traditionally begins with a solemn festive mass in the Antoniuskapelle, followed by a colourful procession through the village. Music clubs, marksmen, the volunteer fire brigade, and associations from Niedersaubach and neighbouring Rümmelbach accompany the procession, which ends at Peter-Adam-Platz. The secular part of the festival begins there with Frühschoppen (a morning pint), draft beer, and Saarland specialities.
Unlike the large folk festivals in the Saar, the Antoniuskirmes deliberately remains manageable: a few rides for the children, stalls with sweets and crêpes, live music by regional bands, and the famous Geesekipper-Schwenker, a local variation of the Saarland barbecue. The associations serve their guests themselves, and the proceeds go to village projects.
The festival is supported by the local heritage association Unser Niedersaubach, which organises the programme together with the St. Marien Lebach parish and local associations. The Antoniuskirmes is more than just an event—it is a piece of living folk culture in the Saarland, where faith, tradition, and neighbourliness naturally go hand in hand.
Those who come for the fair also get to know a particularly quiet corner of the Saarland. Nestled between forests and rolling hills, the district offers a starting point for walks in the Lebach countryside. The Antoniuskapelle itself is worth a look: a simple sacred building that has shaped the village's identity for generations.
The 2026 edition of the Antoniuskirmes falls on Sunday, May 24, 2026. As every year, the event takes place at Peter-Adam-Platz in Niedersaubach, a district belonging to the town of Lebach in the Saarlouis district. The local heritage association Unser Niedersaubach is organising it in cooperation with the St. Marien parish.
The event begins with the festive mass in the Antoniuskapelle, followed by the traditional procession and the opening of the fair on the village square. Catering is provided exclusively by the local associations – the proceeds go to village projects.
The detailed programme will be published on the heritage association's website in the weeks leading up to the festival.
