Visual Arts in Altona's Green Lung

Nestled between the classicist Altona Town Hall and the towering Christianskirche lies the Christianswiese – a park-like square that transforms into an open-air gallery in summer. For two days, around 60 white tents turn the meadow into a marketplace for visual arts: painting, graphics, sculpture, photography, mixed media.

Direct Sales Between Artists and the Public

The concept is deliberately accessible: instead of gallery distance, regional and international artists present their works directly at their own stands, discussing techniques, inspiration, and prices with visitors. Buying art here becomes a personal encounter, not a Sotheby's auction. The price range extends from affordable prints under 100 euros to high-priced sculptures costing several thousand euros.

The Art Market is part of the large altonale festival, which shapes the cultural landscape of Hamburg's west every summer – with open-air concerts, literature, theatre, dance, films, and a huge street festival. The 2026 theme "In Plain Sight" emphasizes the accessibility of art in public spaces, through the old towns of Altona and Ottensen.

Altona as an Art Hub

The Altona district was historically its own city (Danish-German until 1937), and this independence continues to shape its cultural identity today: a dense gallery scene, artists' studios in old warehouses, and nearby art colleges. The Art Market sees itself as part of this DNA, providing freelance artists with a platform beyond the traditional gallery system.
