A weekend of African culture in Altona — Music, Market, Encounters
For over two decades, ALAFIA has been Hamburg's central Africa festival. For three days, Große Bergstraße in Altona — the shopping street around IKEA and the district center — transforms into a vibrant meeting point for the African and Black diaspora. Music from Africa and the Black diaspora meets market, gastronomy, and encounters.
The musical program spans a wide range: Afro-Beats, African Roots, Pop & Pop-Rock, Hip-Hop & Rap, Jazz & Blues, Electronic Dance Music, Reggae, Ragga, and Dancehall. Live acts alternate with DJ sets. In recent years, the festival has presented acts from Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Congo, South Africa, and the Black diaspora in Europe.
Alongside the music, there is a large African market with arts and crafts, textiles, jewelry, books, and culinary specialties — Yassa, Jollof Rice, Mafé, Plantains, Injera with Wat. The festival has always been an important meeting point for the African communities in Northern Germany.
Große Bergstraße is a pedestrian zone in the Altona district, within walking distance of Altona station. The festival uses the open urban topography for a communal, free-of-charge format. The organizer is the association Zwischenräume e.V., led by Akpovo / Heiland — supported by the Altona district and the City of Hamburg.
From August 28 to 30, 2026, Große Bergstraße around IKEA Altona will transform into Hamburg's largest African meeting point. Three days of music, market, dance, and culinary delights with around 20,000 expected visitors.
The main stage will feature live acts from Africa and the diaspora — Afro-Beats, African Roots, Pop, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Blues, EDM, Reggae, Ragga, and Dancehall. Specific line-up confirmations will follow throughout summer 2026 on alafia.de.
Alongside the music: an African market with arts and crafts, textiles, jewelry, and books; culinary specialties from West Africa, the Maghreb, and East Africa; encounter formats with associations and initiatives from Hamburg's Black community.
