About Alstervergnügen

The Alstervergnügen is Hamburg's best-known Volksfest (public festival) on the water. Four days at the end of August transform the Jungfernstieg waterfront and the Binnenalster into a stage for live music, fireworks, Hanseatic culinary delights, and family activities. Free admission, hundreds of thousands of visitors, a Hamburg classic in the Hamburg-Mitte district.

The Binnenalster as a Festival Stage

The Alstervergnügen utilizes Hamburg's unique geography: the Binnenalster, framed by the Jungfernstieg, the "Vier Jahreszeiten" and Le Méridien hotels, the Alsterhaus department store, and high-rise buildings, is one of Europe's most beautiful inner-city bodies of water. It is precisely this postcard backdrop that becomes the venue for Hamburg's "best-known festival on the water" at the end of August.

Four Days of Summer Festival, Always by the Water

For four days, the festival spreads around the Binnenalster:

  • Live Music on several stages — Pop, Rock, Jazz, Hanseatic singer-songwriters
  • Fireworks over the water — the most beautiful moments of the Hamburg summer night, with the famous reflection in the Alster lake
  • Culinary Delights — from Hanseatic classics (fish rolls, crab, Labskaus) to international street food trucks and vegetarian and vegan options
  • Family Activities — carousels, bouncy castles, face painting, water sports demonstrations

Lombardsbrücke as a Grandstand

Those who want to experience the fireworks in all their glory should head to the Lombardsbrücke early. The bridge over the narrow passage between the Außenalster and Binnenalster is the traditional prime spot for the nightly pyro shows — the reflection on the water, the symmetrical backdrop of Jungfernstieg architecture, the Hamburg wind from the harbour, all combine to create a visual experience that no other German Volksfest can offer.

Reusable Cups and Sustainability

A programmatic highlight of recent editions is the reusable cup system: only reusable cups are issued with a deposit at all beverage stands — a response to Hamburg's climate protection ambitions and a model that other major festivals in the Hanseatic city have now adopted.

Hanseatic Tradition Since the 1970s

The Alstervergnügen has been running as an event format since the 1970s — a Hamburg summer ritual across generations. Today, the organizer is WAGS Hamburg Events GmbH, which also operates other major district and Christmas markets in the Hanseatic city.

Several Hundred Thousand Guests

Visitor numbers over the four days are in the hundreds of thousands. Those looking for central spots should arrive early; those who want to experience the Alstervergnügen relaxed should come in the mornings and afternoons. In the evenings, and especially during fireworks, the Jungfernstieg gets crowded.

Alstervergnügen — edition 2026

The Alstervergnügen 2026 runs from Friday, August 28th to Monday, August 31st. Four days of summer festival on the Binnenalster with live music on several stages, fireworks over the water, Hanseatic and international culinary offerings, and a family program. Free admission, reusable cup system, hundreds of thousands of visitors expected.

The 2026 edition will once again bring together the residents of Hamburg and guests from all over Northern Germany at the Jungfernstieg. Live music on pop, rock, and jazz stages, fireworks over the Binnenalster, culinary stands ranging from Hanseatic (fish rolls, crab, Labskaus) to international.

The full stage and fireworks program will be published in the summer of 2026 on hamburger-grossveranstaltungen.de and hamburg.de. As in previous years, reusable cups will be used at all beverage stands, and WAGS Hamburg Events GmbH will coordinate the logistics.
