Three-day town festival in the Westmünsterland castle town from May 29th to 31st, 2026, with a city run, live stage, and children's flea market
Anyone traveling to the western Münsterland and looking for a typical town festival should visit Ahaus on the last weekend of May 2026 — the Westmünsterland medium-sized town with its baroque castle as a landmark. From May 29th to 31st, 2026, the Ahauser Stadtfest will take place — three days of city center festival mile, coordinated by the City of Ahaus and the local Business Association.
The defining sporty-festive element of the Stadtfest is the city run — a running event that winds through the city center and around the castle grounds. Various distances are offered (from children's runs to 5 km routes to longer adult routes), the finish area is in the city center, and the castle backdrop makes the run visually particularly attractive. Registration and detailed information are available from the Ahaus Business Association.
A central live stage in the pedestrian zone will feature a music program over all three festival days — mostly regional bands, local acts, and cover bands from Westphalia and the neighboring Dutch border region. The program follows the classic Stadtfest rhythm: opening evening on Friday, highlight on Saturday evening, family program on Sunday afternoon. Specific acts will be communicated before the event on ahaus.de.
Over the weekend, there will be a children's flea market with stalls where children can sell their own items — a popular family tradition at many Münsterland town festivals. In addition, there will be craft activities, a carousel, and a small stage program for children. The family orientation is part of the DNA of the Ahauser Stadtfest — not a large-scale folk festival, but a community-oriented city center event.
Sunday, May 31st, 2026, will be a Sunday with open shops — Ahaus city center stores will be open from 1 PM to 6 PM, complementing the Stadtfest with retail activity. This combination of Stadtfest and shopping is the economic logic behind many Westphalian town festivals; the Business Association coordinates both elements.
Ahaus Castle is one of the most important baroque buildings in the Westmünsterland. Built between 1690 and 1716 according to plans by the Electorate of Cologne architect Ambrosius von Oelde as a summer residence for the Prince-Bishops of Münster. Today, the castle houses the Westphalian Wilhelms University Library and cultural institutions; the grounds are publicly accessible and form part of the festival backdrop during the Stadtfest.
Ahaus (around 39,000 inhabitants) is located in the Borken district near the Dutch border, in the western Münsterland. A mix of agricultural surroundings, local mechanical engineering, textile, and service industries. The townscape is characterized by the castle, the city center with its market square, and modern transport infrastructure. The city center is traffic-calmed and ideal for a Stadtfest with pedestrian flow. Easily accessible via the A 31 (Emden-Bottrop), and by train from Münster, Borken, or Gronau.
The 2026 edition, as usual, combines sports (city run), culture (live stage, program in the city center area), and family offerings (children's flea market, craft stalls, carousel). Ahaus Castle serves as the visual anchor — the meeting point and the route of the run relate to the castle backdrop.
The Sunday with open shops on May 31st turns the Stadtfest into a city center marketing event. Shops directly benefit from the festival crowds — a classic Westphalian Stadtfest logic. The Ahaus Business Association coordinates the connection between the festival and retail.
Specific stage program and list of participating bands will be communicated before the event on ahaus.de and via the Ahaus Business Association.
Free admission. City run registration fees for participants (distances, rates on the Business Association's website). Food, drinks, and market goods are subject to charge at usual Stadtfest prices.
By car: A 31 / B 70, Ahaus exit, then follow signs to the city center. By train: Ahaus station, then a 10-minute walk to the city center and the castle.
Admission to the festival grounds, stage, and all program points is free. City run registration fee (for participants). Food and drinks at the stalls are subject to charge.
Friday, May 29th — Saturday, May 30th — Sunday, May 31st (Sunday with open shops 1 PM-6 PM).
Registration and detailed information from the Ahaus Business Association. Route options for children, adults, and hobby runners.
Combine a castle tour with a visit to the Stadtfest — the grounds are freely accessible, and the castle interior is partially open for special events. The children's flea market on Saturday is a tradition — families with children can register as sellers in advance.
