Traditional fair with amusement rides, craft market, and music parade on Talweiherplatz Birkenfeld – Return in 2026 after a multi-year break
The Prämienmarkt Birkenfeld is one of the most traditional fairs in the Hunsrück-Nahe region. After a multi-year break since the last event in 2019, the festival returns to Talweiherplatz in Birkenfeld in 2026. For four days, the grounds transform into a diverse folk festival and market square: amusement rides for all generations, a large craft market with well over a hundred vendors, gastronomic offerings, and a traditional music parade on Sunday form the core of a program that brings the Birkenfeld city center back into the summer 2026 event calendar.
The Prämienmarkt is one of the oldest events in the town of Birkenfeld and has been firmly embedded in the public consciousness for generations. Its name refers to the historical practice of awarding prizes for outstanding achievements in crafts, livestock, or horse breeding during the market. To this day, the market remains an expression of the close connection between urban culture and the agricultural-craft traditions of the Birkenfeld region.
The last event before 2026 took place in 2019. A combination of organizational changes and the consequences of the pandemic led to the Prämienmarkt having to be suspended for several years. The revival in 2026 was met with great enthusiasm in Birkenfeld and the surrounding area and was prepared by the town as well as the participating showmen, vendors, and associations. The Prämienmarkt thus regains its firm place in the town's July program.
The venue is Talweiherplatz Birkenfeld, which, with its central location and adjacent infrastructure, offers ideal conditions for a large-scale folk festival. The approximately ten thousand square meter site accommodates both large amusement rides and the extensive craft market without making the paths too long for visitors.
Over four days, the market presents itself with different focuses: a classic amusement park with dodgems, carousels, and show booths, a craft market with well over a hundred and twenty vendors from arts and crafts, regional products, and home economics, as well as a traditional music parade on Sunday that marches through the city center with local music and cultural associations. Monday has always been Family Day and is traditionally celebrated as a half-price day by the showmen.
The Prämienmarkt Birkenfeld 2026 takes place from Friday, July 3, to Monday, July 6, 2026, on Talweiherplatz. After a multi-year break, the traditional fair returns to the Birkenfeld city center with a large amusement park, a craft market featuring over a hundred and twenty vendors, and a music parade on Sunday. Families, showmen, and associations are preparing for a highly anticipated revival of the market, which for decades was one of the defining summer events of the district town.
The four-day program combines an amusement park, a craft market, and a music program. Friday opens the market with a ceremonial ringing and the first evening in the festival tents and at the amusement rides. Saturday and Sunday are for the large public turnout, with stage programs, show acts, and the traditional music parade. Monday concludes the market as Family Day with half-price promotions from the showmen.
Over one hundred and twenty vendors present regional handicrafts, homemade specialties, jewelry, textiles, and household goods in the city center. The market traditionally attracts many visitors from the surrounding administrative districts of the Birkenfeld district.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the organizer in spring/summer. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years:
Exact times for the music parade, stage programs, and special events will be announced in advance on the website of the City of Birkenfeld.
Admission to the market is free. Amusement rides at usual prices; on Monday, traditionally at half price.
