Festival Meets Wave Pool

While festivals usually take place on meadows, squares, or industrial sites, the Sperenzken Open Air in Ahaus dares to do something unusual: a crossgenre festival at the AquAHAUS leisure pool, utilizing the facilities of an indoor/outdoor swimming complex as a festival venue. Since 2022, the Musikerinitiative Ahaus e.V. has been organizing this unique event — and with its concept, Sperenzken has quickly made a name for itself in the festival scene of Münsterland/Niederrhein.

Crossgenre Pop Concept

Unlike many festivals that focus on a specific music genre, the Sperenzken Open Air consciously pursues a crossgenre pop concept: local and national acts from pop, indie, rock, and electro are mixed in the lineup. The goal is a blend that brings together pop fans, indie followers, and electro lovers alike. The spectrum ranges from acoustic singer-songwriters to electronic live acts.

AquAHAUS as Festival Venue

The AquAHAUS Ahaus is a modern indoor and outdoor swimming pool located at Unterortwick 32, 48683 Ahaus. For the Sperenzken festival, the pool becomes the festival backdrop: the main stage is set up outdoors or at the edge of the pool. Seating and standing areas are spread across sunbathing lawns, pool edges, and the foyer. A cocktail bar, a kids' area (the festival is family-friendly), and a chill-out zone complement the offerings. Visitors can actually swim between sets — 'Festival meets Wave Pool' is the motto.

Musikerinitiative Ahaus e.V.

The organizer is the Musikerinitiative Ahaus e.V. — an association that promotes cultural activities in Ahaus and the Westmünsterland region. With the Sperenzken Open Air, the initiative has created its own festival format that is unique in Germany. The association's work is largely voluntary, which explains the personal atmosphere of the festival.

Ahaus in the Westmünsterland

Ahaus is a town in the Borken district in Westmünsterland with around 41,000 inhabitants. Known for Ahaus Castle, the Stadtkrone, and the Schwartingsche Haus, the town is located near the Dutch border and is accessible via the L 568. The AquAHAUS Ahaus is one of the region's most important leisure destinations — and with the Sperenzken Open Air, Ahaus has built its own festival identity, gaining supra-regional attention in the sub-festival scene of Westmünsterland.
